Should I buy a used or new Honda CR-Z?

Hello,

I am planning on buying a cr-z. I was wondering... is it worth it just to buy the New 2015 Model? I was looking at used Honda CR-Zs and I noticed that the price difference is generally around 5-7,000... give or take. I feel like it might just be worth buying a new one off the bat.

Advice?

I bought my 2012 CR-Z used with only around 12,000 miles on it; it was practically new. I got it for around $9,000 UNDER original sticker. The CR-Z is known to have a fairly low resale value as it is a very niche/unique car. Personally, with a CR-Z, I would suggest buying a used one that is still under warranty. That way you still get the new car feel, and you can use the savings to bolt on a supercharger!

I bought my 2013 earlier this year with ~3000 miles on it for about 5-6k less than sticker price. There's definitely deals around that make buying used quite the better option in my opinion.

2013's are essentially the same car inside and out as the 2015's, and enough time has passed to find 2013's on the market. That only really matters if you value things like the black interior and lithium-ion battery. If you don't even care for those things go for a low mileage 2011-12 and get an out of this world deal.

These cars have pretty steep depreciation, so a certified used 2013+ will give you the best bang for the buck as they have the same features as the 2015 model. This steep depreciation is solely due to the lack of demand. It's a niche product. 2011-12 models can be found for great prices and at very low mileage and will give you almost the same ownership experience. The 2013+ models do have upgraded batteries, a higher redline, black interiors as opposed to black and grey ones, minor trim changes, adjustable lumbar support, a backup camera, and a wider driver side mirror. I purchased a 2011 a year ago and for me, the difference in price is not worth the changes in the 2013+ models.

I got my '11 at a great price and it only has 24k miles on it. For it being a 4 year old car, it feels as though I got it new. If I found a newer model for a reasonable price, I probably would have gone for it, but I'm perfectly fine with what I got. It's all personal preference honestly

With that type of price difference, it is worth it to buy USED!

I also bought my crz used. Bought in December 2012, I purchased a Certified Pre-Owned 2011 EX model with 15,000 miles on it. Again as people said, felt brand new.

If you want to save money, look for a CPO (certified pre-owned by Honda) 2013 or 2014 model. The CPO will extend factory warranties by approximately a year (or equivalent mileage).

Close! Bumper-to-bumper coverage gets pushed out +1 to 4 years/48,000 miles but powertrain coverage is +2 years to 7 years/100,000 miles!

Also, if a car gets certified after the original expiration, the new owner has a full year/12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage from date of vehicle delivery.

Definitely check ou the used market in your area.
As everyone has stated, these cars do not hold their value well, and that is a function of the market, not the car. If you can find one with some basic warranty left (or at least powe train and hybrid battery warranty), you will find a great deal out there. Which model year to go for depends on the features you want (as described by others in this thread). Also, if you have certain modification plans. For instance, the Hondata FlashPro only works on the 2011-12 model year ECU's, so if you plan on tuning or adding a supercharger, those are the best years to go with. There are other options, but this leaves you the biggest choice. Plus, the 11-12 years were the most sold, so there should be a good selection, although warranty will be coming to an end on the oldest ones.

If you buy a new one, you get full warranty, and the dealer will like you better. But you will pay handsomely for that - you'll lose 20% minimum the moment you take the car off the lot. And that buys a huge extended warranty with money to spare if this is your only concern!

Good luck!

I recently was trying to make the same decision. I ended up buying a 2011 Cr-Z EX with just 38k miles as it was 50% less than buying a new one! As several people have also said, mine feels brand new. The interior is spotless, the paint is fantastic, and the dealer a I bought it from had the engine steam cleaned and so even the engine bay is spotless!

In fact, most people I've talked to have been shocked that it's a 2011 model :)

I got a used 2013 with under 3k miles on it, and saved about 5k. Well worth going down that route IMHO, if you can find a similar deal.

Got my 11' used with 6k miles. Saved 3-4k and came with certified warranty. Some may argue that I could have spent the extra for the 13 and get a back up camera..etc.

However mine came w/ arm rest, XM, navi, oem spoiler, and PWP which was so hard to find back in 2012. Although I wish I had a back up camera and the LED DRLs but I did save money which is good

That's a good point. I was willing to go 2013 or 2014 if I could get the trim/color I wanted. I got lucky and got a higher trim than I expected in my second-choice color. I wasn't prepared to pay an extra few thousand bucks for red paint.
