Low rumble on hills

Hey guys,

I have a 2012 Honda CR-Z with the CVT with about 88,000 miles. I have noticed a low rumble and vibration when I am on a steep hill and trying to accelerate. It kind of feels the same when you are on a hill and you suck at stick about to stall out. The difference here is the engine isn't stalling. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have checked and noticed that the CVT fluid was low. I refilled it.
I have had the CVT fluid changed at 60,000
I do all the small maintenance and nothing major has been done.

Next steps is to try and diagnose in manual (paddle shift) mode to see if it still does it. I'm thinking it may be the transmission starting in 2nd instead of 1st or the rear differential is complaining?

Thanks for any input

As a CVT do we have any Hill Holder option? Other than that if under warranty I would have it looked at by a Honda dealership that is familiar with the peculiarities of our particular CVT transmission.

If the fluid was low, my question would be why especially if it had been serviced. Low fluid or other issues may be causing the issue. It is supposed to be a closed system it should not lose fluid. Just topping it off is a bad idea. You need to find the root cause of the fluid loss.

It may have something to do with hill assist if it isn't doing it in other loads. I am not sure if the vsa needs recalibrated. And not %100 sure agian if this is linked, but try turning off traction control prior to the hill talking about. To do this hold down the car with skiggly lines for about three seconds until it flashes.

You had the first CVT fluid change at 60,000, but it's better to change it every 30,000 miles. Since you're near 30,000 on this fluid interval, I suggest that you change it now, as well as the inline CVT oil filter (behind the radiator drain plug.) See if that makes a difference (and check for any contamination in the drained oil.)

25430-PLR-003 Filter (Atf) List Price: $28.73 Price: $21.21

Also, make sure you get Honda CVT fluid for the change. Sometimes, a fresh oil change is the best thing you can do for your CVT. [My 2002 Insight is doing the same thing you've described, and it's got 200,000+ miles on it total, with about 25,000 since the last change--a sign that it's due for some tlc.]

I'll look into it again but my car rolls back as bad as a manual. There is no assist on holding me on a hill. The engine even shuts off auto on a hill which makes it even harder to get going

*** correction ***
Hill start assist is only on manual CR-Z Models. I was not blessed with a manual transmission. I have the automatic.

Yeah, my 2013 CVT has hill assist--but I didn't even realize it until someone was talking about it a few months back--tested it out, and if you stop on a hill and leave your foot on the brake until it's time to take off, the car should hold its position for a brief period of time. If you let off the brake, and then immediately apply the brake again--when you let off again, it may not hold on that 2nd try....

Definitely change that filter. Someone on here had to explain to a honda dealer where to find the CVT filter and give them the part number. Safe to say not many people know about it.

Next steps is to try and diagnose in manual (paddle shift) mode to see if it still does it. I'm thinking it may be the transmission starting in 2nd instead of 1st or the rear differential is complaining?
anyone else notice this?
