Cvt hitting rev limiter

Hey guys I'm new on here and need help. I purchased a new crz with a cvt last April, and I seem to be getting an intermittent problem. When I give my car full throttle my car keeps reving and starts bouncing off the rev limiter, I took it to the dealer and they said it drives normal. Any idea what may cause this? Here is a link to a video I took of what's going on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlkXPSP2s0c&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I have 23k on my CVT without any issue. In sports mode it will take it to red line and hold it there as it build up speed. I can use the paddle shifters to change gears (Ratio's) and bring the RPM's down.

I am not quite sure what your discribing.

A video would help.

There is no issue... When you have the CVT in nuetral or in park the car will not go further then 6300 RPM's. Once it does it will flutter at the rev limiter... When in Drive and in sport mode the vehicle will automatically shift at 6200 RPM's, right at the rev limiter. The vehicle will not allow you go pass the rev limiter unless you get a Hondata and mess with some stuff most likely.

I say what you are experiencing is normal. I did this with my 2011 CVT and I could tell you it does the same with my 2012 6mt.

So you are saying its normal for a cvt transmission to keep reving and bouncing off the rev limiter? I use to have a Sentra SER with a cvt and the car never hit the rev limiter. If this is normal then I really regret getting a cvt.

Mikey, I think there are a bunch of MT owners in here trying to give you advice.
There is something wrong there, I would take it back to the dealer and ensure that you sit in the car with the tech to show them the issue, in my opinion. The car should definitely hit high RPM in auto, but should not be bouncing off the limiter like that.

I do not have that problem in my CVT CR-Z. I would say you should take it in for service.
I did however noticed in my car that in Sport mode if I push the gas pedal to the floor fast it revs close to the limiter and sometimes bounces back to around 3000-4000 rpms and I loose almost all power for a second or two, but after it just goes back up close to the limit and keeps accelerating.
I do not know if what I experience is normal either but it does not happens all the times I accelerate hard.
The feeling that I get is almost like the traction control cutting the power completely, the car jerks and then resumes accelerating. I tried with and without traction control ON (at different speeds) and I could replicate with both, so I do not think its the traction control.
Maybe a feature of the CVT to protect itself. I have a Nissan Altima 2.5SL with CVT and that does not have traction control but if I push the gas pedal too fast and the car looses traction it will hold the revs at some point for a few seconds before it resumes accelerating. I always thought that was normal too.

Something wrong is probably wrong with your timing because it should automatically shift at the rev limiter when driving rather then doing that.

@Silver: The car usually initially has no power in CVT until usually around 3500 - 4000 RPM's. With your issue exactly with the loss of power, is it just that it shifts and that loss is the belt slipping to the next gear... I don't know... If you able to understand your Z and get around it without a problem then, you have no problem if you are all gravy with that ^.^

Weird... at first I thought it was because you had used the paddle shifter to set a gear so the car was not auto-shifting for you. But that video clearly shows that you're not in paddle-shift mode. That is so wacky... there definitely is something wrong.

Maybe they can reflash your TCU or at least run a diagnostic on it to see why it's not shifting?

Your junk is broke. Mine has never done that. In auto mode the car holds at redline as the speed builds at wide open throttle.

If I have it set to shift and I don't shift at red line it does and drops the RPM's.

I have driven this car really hard and think the CVT is great. Hopefully you can get it fixed. I will try to shoot a video tommorrow of mine in both modes.

Yeah I first noticed the problem when I was in manual mode and the car rev'd so fast in 1st it was hitting the rev limiter and not auto shifting. Then I started noticing it happening in sport mode even had it this happen in normal mode. I took it to the dealer and they test drove it and said the car drove normal, that's why I'm showing you all what's going on. I love the car, but I seriously regret the cvt.

I've never had my CVT hit the limiter other than when I accidentally put my car into paddle mode. I'd take it to Honda, if they don't help take it to another dealer that will. Load the video up and show them if they don't believe you.

He aint crazy...

I just started having the exact same issue shown in that video. Crap :(
It's happened to me in sport and normal. FYI, I never use the flappy paddles because they are junk. This whole cvt is junk....i wish i had gotten 6mt.

i'll recreate tomorrow with a vid as well...

I'm sorry to hear you are having the same problem, this is my first Honda and I'm convinced they don't make a good cvt. I loved it in my SER, the only reason I got the cvt is so my fiance could drive it as well. I'm with you wishing I went with a 6mt as well. Guess I'll be calling the dealer again this week, hopefully they can duplicate the problem this time.

I have a similar but different issue. If I'm in auto mode on sport and I hit around 100mph the throttle cuts off completely while the car is buried at redline and my car jerks as it instantly decelerates. Unfortunately that, along with my battery issues are unidentifiable by my dealership and nothing gets fixed.

No problem  the last time I took it to the dealer they could not duplicate the problem as it is a intermittent issue. I'm hoping showing them the video I took will help, I'm gonna try and make an appointment for this week. I'll keep you all updated, I appreciate all your help.

I have an interesting issue with the CVT as well... whenever I start the car up for the first time in the morning and take off in sport (always have paddle shift on in sport) - first gear will scream vtec, and I will shift when it is close to redline, however the gear ratio does not change and it will actually rev way past redline.

Not sure what the issue is, if there is one - but definitely a little wacky. It certainly hauls ass for that first couple of seconds though. Car can definitely put out some serious power.

Well they did a software update as well as an IMA update to my car today, and on my way home the car continues to have the same problem. I called them when I got home and the tech isn't sure what is wrong so they are going to call the Honda tech support and get back to me. If this problem persists I'm going to file for lemon law.

Well not sure if anyone cares, but I have another update. I dropped the car off at the dealer so they could work with Honda technical support, they took some snap shots and sent them to Honda tech support and they'll get back to me tomorrow. In the mean time I get to drive a sweet 2011 Honda Element

I'm definitely interested in the outcome!

I also have a CVT but haven't put the "pedal to the metal" . . . yet . . . I'd like to see how this turns out in the event I experience the same issue.

Thanks again Mikey215
