CR-Z reviews are terrible, but forum members love their CR-Z's and my niece who used to sell Hondas was impressed. Today I went for a test drive, but my salesman was new to Honda. I can go back for some unresolved questions, but some are probably more honestly answered here:
1. You talk to the Nav, but does it give voice directions? How do you know if you have the most recent NAV CD?
2. Looks like still no integrated backup camera, but is there a backup alarm?
3. Is there an energy monitor display on-screen, ala Prius?
4. USB mem drive plugs in somewhere for music, but what is what looks like a CF card by the CD slot?
5. Is the CD player just single CD or changer?
6. Does your phone's directory load into the car for calling (like a friend's Mini)?
7. On the CVT, what cancels a paddle selection?
8. Does dog hair stick in the seat weave (like on my FJ; even vacuuming isn't effective)?
9. Do the rear wing windows open? Provisions for significant flow-thru ventilation.
10. Does the CRZ's energy designation qualify for CA carpool lane stickers (if they become available again)?
TIA

1) Nav does give driving directions by voice and there is a version number of the CD somewhere in the about so you can check against that to see if you have latest CD
2) No alarms, at least in US market. Going to add one myself.
3) Yes it on the top left section of console displaying battery level and below it is whether you charing or using the battery
4) CF card is the Compact Flash card slot, its pretty much an outdated memory card. I doubt you would even use it at all since you can just plug in your USB stick using the USB connecter found in the compartment below the NAV
5) Its single
6) You phone just synchs bluetooth wise for picking up a call or trying to call someone and giving it the number. You have to manually program the phone book so that you can just tell it "Call Mr. Peanut"
7) If your in Normal or Econ after a short time the car with cancel you selection and pick the gear it likes. In sport mode it will cancel your selection if you up shifting to far or your about to red line and then it kick it up a gear. Havent tested down shifting to far.
8) Sorry dont know
9) Nope
10) I dont think it will

Hope my answers help.

1. You talk to the Nav, but does it give voice directions? How do you know if you have the most recent NAV CD?

Yes it does. There's a screen where you can view the nav version.

2. Looks like still no integrated backup camera, but is there a backup alarm?

Nope.

3. Is there an energy monitor display on-screen, ala Prius?

Yes, it shows the flow to/from gas and to/from battery. It's similar to the Prius screen.

4. USB mem drive plugs in somewhere for music, but what is what looks like a CF card by the CD slot?

That's exactly what it is - an old school PC flash card that nobody uses any more. :)

5. Is the CD player just single CD or changer?

Honestly no idea. I've never used it.

6. Does your phone's directory load into the car for calling (like a friend's Mini)?

Yes it does.

7. On the CVT, what cancels a paddle selection?

Sorry, no idea. I went 6MT.

8. Does dog hair stick in the seat weave (like on my FJ; even vacuuming isn't effective)?

No idea - I won't let my dogs in it yet :)

9. Do the rear wing windows open? Provisions for significant flow-thru ventilation.

No they don't.

10. Does the CRZ's energy designation qualify for CA carpool lane stickers (if they become available again)?

Sorry, no idea on this either.

I really love this car - I bet you will too.

Wow, lot of in depth questions there, I think we need somebody to assign each question to an individual lol as a non-EX owner, I'll save those for the owners in the know. Let me knock out a couple of the simpler ones for you:
3. Yes, actually there are two. There is a gauge on the left which shows when you are charging or discharging the battery pack and it shows to what extent that is happening via a series of bars that light up. Also on the right side is a user selectable display which shows a graphic of which energy sources are being used via arrows, that display also shows when the battery is being charged/discharged.
4. Yes the EX with navigation has a card reader as well as a USB port.
9. No, the rear windows do not open.
Most of your other questions apply to the EX version and I can't be sure since I own a base model, also I have no dog so I can't tell you about hair sticking to the seats. To the best of my knowledge:
1. Yes, there are voice directions. No idea on most recent maps?
2. No backup camera in the US, no sensor either.
5. Just a single disk.
7. Nothing, if you are in sport mode. Need more input from CVT owners.

Thanx for all the quick responses. Yes, I realize it was a pretty diverse set of issues, but I thought that was better than doing ten posts. Lots of helpful info there. A couple more:
1. Has anybody played with a plug-in charger to top off a partially depleted battery at home?
2. Do the headlights (hi low fog) function as DRLs? (I perceive that my DRL/Headlights on my FJ keep me visible, or maybe it's just the size).
Also any more answers to the first ten are welcome.
TIA

There are DRL's but the HID bulbs from the EX are not the DRL's but rather the center most which I think is actually the high beam bulb. If you want I can snap you a picture tomorrow.

There's also a light sensing auto setting for the headlights (at least on the EX there is)

For what its worth, the domestic car rags give a ton of great cars a hard time. When the first gen fit came out a bunch of mags roughed it up at first and then suddenly gas was expensive and it made top 10 cars for 4 years straight from consumer digest and I think also c&d. I'd bet the original CRZ was bashed by the camaro and firebird lovers of its time as well. The CRZ is certainly a car I think you have to "get" to enjoy and thats not a bad thing. Good luck choosing your car.

Thanx. I guess high beams for DRLs would garner the most attention in daytime. No pic necessary.
Light sensing? Meaning lights can come on at dusk, I guess. I assume it also has auto off after you shut down the engine.
4 years! Didn't know it was around that long. Thought it was new in 2011, or 2010. Just saw it recently on an entertainment show in the Bay Area. Of course Honda never advertises it. I guess if the engine/battery hasn't changed in 4 years, conjecture about enhancements are less credible; i.e., may as well get one now while the touted "hard to get into seating" isn't yet a reality for me ;=)
Looks like one will be in my near future.

I was talking about the Fit 4 door not the CRZ when I mentioned 4 years. Sorry :)

Back up camera would be nice. No sensor warning on US models, and the gas cap doesn't lock.Yes it has all kinds of energy monitors. They are fun when you first buy the car then you forget about them and you just drive and enjoy. Haven't let the dogs in the car yet its such a cool car I want to keep it new. But if you take your dog places you must be used to hair, and it's all about the dogs. I have been looking at Detail Shops price lists,$40 bucks more if your car has dog hair to remove. CD/USB get an Ipod fill it up and forget about it. Blue tooth phone stuff works numbers transfer. As for the voice commands it works,if you talk to it correctly, and it controls almost everything. But honestly I find voice too frustrating to use....too many commands to learn. But a huge plus for the Navigation system is that it works when you are driving. Unlike my wifes Lexus that system is nicer than the CRZ but you cant use it while your driving. If your looking for the latest in hi tech don't get the Nav put in and aftermarket,it will have back up camera and sensors. For me that's to much trouble, Honda did a great job on everything it's not perfect but what is.

It's funny the reviews suck. I think about it very often and it makes me laugh. Don't listen to the reviews. Just buy the car, you will love it like the rest of us. Your 10 questions or concerns are minor. Is dog hair a deal breaker? I'm the type that if something bothers me it makes me nuts. This car is so neat and fun and the short comings are few, that I don't care or notice them.

Seriously it's that much fun.

Maybe I mentioned that "my salesman" was in his first month at Honda, and admitted to minimal knowledge. That said, as we rode around, he told me all about the horizontal lines that appear on the rear view video camera display that show you how far you are from obstructions, including one that indicates when you are too close to open the hatchback. He sounded very convincing, even though I thought I read on this forum that there was no backup camera. Only when we got back and I put it in reverse to see the rearview did he say he had to go inside to check on the camera.
I've bought my last couple cars from a local broker who charges $300 over invoice, and I'll probably check prices with him again. Assuming dealers are hungry, I may give them a chance to beat the broker's price, but am not optimistic. So I'm a little hesitant to go back for info (except to see the colors in various lights) when I doubt I'll buy there (ethics, my mother's fault).
I spent all yesterday afternoon reading this forum, otherwise I'd have had twice as many questions ;=) Lots of great info here!

Did you get it yet??? Think you'll love the car. you've gotten a lot of info already but thought I'd add this. You'll get a web site called Honda's owners link which will allow you to know when you need to update the navi and how to do it. I'd never had a navi system before and it was a bit of a shock to the system at first getting to learn how to use it to the max. I still dont use the voice commands except with blue-tooth. Overall though I've been very pleased with it. And the ride in this car is just awesome. Its not fast by 0-60 standards but there's a feel to the ride in it that's just breath-taking and will extract your inner child if you aren't careful. Find a windy road sometime, put it in sport and enjoy.

Doesn't happen THAT fast, but in large part due to the excellent info from this group, I called my broker that I've used for 20+ years and he's looking for my Silver EX CVT Navi.

I downloaded the owner's and Navi manuals. I'll quickly check my CD against the most recent and raise a stink if it's not the latest.

Haven't seen any answers about service (especially electrical) manual, on-line or hardcopy.
