Hello, I don’t currently have a CR-Z, but I’m working on changing that soon, I’ve been doing some research on them and eventually found my way here, I figured this would most likely be the place to get information.

I do have some questions, what to look for when purchasing, any issues that may come up, quirks and so on. The usual stuff, lol

Oh, one question in particular, the battery, what’s the average lifespan, on the early models especially, since they’re not lithium ion, I’d imagine they wouldn’t last as long.

Thank you for reading, and putting up with another noob!

Welcome to the forum, Beardman.

To answer your question, the IMA batteries generally have continued to last long enough that complaints on them going out seem very rare -- I've not even seen someone mention this happening, myself, even for the first models.

For the older, non-Lithium-ion batteries, the main difference in comparison to the newer batteries seems to be charge capacity; I've seen it noted that the older cars will burn through their assistive charge quicker. The Li-ion battery itself is slightly more powerful and holds higher voltage, so this may be the reason, though I'm certainly no expert.

I only have experience driving my own Z, so maybe owners of the older cars will chime in for confirmation/corrections. I hope you'll be able to join and enjoy ownership with us.

That certainly seems to be the case. I certainly was downshifting more than what I saw newer cars ahead of me doing when we were going uphill near the dragon.

Wikipedia lists the Li-ion packs at 144V, 0.6 kWh. 11-12 was 108V, also 0.6 kWh.

I'm not sure how much relative age of the technology is to blame compared with the actual age of the hardware though.

Many new members ask about the(IMA/Hybrid) battery before buying one. It has been asked and answered so many times surprised you did not find one of those threads. Let me make this simple No one here has replaced the IMA battery in a CR-Z. You can forget this car is a Hybrid. Treat it like any other Used car. Because a CR-Z has no alternator and charging the under hood battery is different than other cars you may have to replace the under hood battery more often. It is like any other car you would buy check it out make sure everything works and if you like it buy it. Speaking of driving it Honda recommends for longevity of the IMA battery car needs to be driven 30 minutes a month. This is not a car that can sit for long periods of time it is bad for both batteries.

As for your other questions there are many other threads and this new forum software it appears the search may work better than the old software.

Welcome! The only issue to look out for so far has been the 12v battery. If it is still the OEM 12v one then it may need replacement. The charging system is somewhat weak compared to a normal ICE. Overall, the powertrain and drivetrain (6sp, CVT) of the Z is quite solid and should last at minimum 200k miles well maintained. I've only seen one forum member so far that had to replace the tranny (CVT) and he did it for about $300 for a used CVT. If you follow the maintenance minder then the car should last you literally FOREVER...

I have an 11. I just changed the engine oil this morning. I am at 145k miles on a 6 speed. Car runs great. I have had to replace the rear brake rotors and the 12V under hood battery. I do stay on top of the maintenance however. Oil and filter change every 5k. Trans oil every 20k. Tires rotated every 10k. I am hoping for 300k miles.

That is quite the milage on that Z. Mine is an 11 CVT and only has about 55k miles on it and still runs like a clock...
