So… I removed the rear cubby and folding part this weekend, It took about 5 minutes, a number 12 socket and a tiny bit of pulling. Putting in the "JDM or Euro" style seats is a piece of cake. I just have to get them now. Working a source in Japan (ridiculous prices so far) and another in Europe.

The seat belts, are an ongoing experiment, they require removing the interior rear body panels. I have some of the panels off no problem so far and am learning slowly how to do the whole thing.

The best news is that so far it looks like the whole thing will be just an hour of work to do with the Euro parts just dropping in for a perfect fit.

A complete DIY when I get everything.

Bizzybear, I will do that. But from what I see so far its just adding the weight of the seat belt assemblies as I can't see the foam seats weighing much more than the hard plastic stuff I would take off. The replacement parts are just a couple of foam cushions (see the diagram). One for the seat bottom (4) and the the other is the seat-back cushion (3) that uses the same hard frame (2) that folds down into the floor. Seat belts are maybe a couple of pounds each?

I can see how some people would want this as an option, but I am not interested. I am also not sure about the US regulations since it is designed as a 2 person vehicle in the US.

That is something I would worry about. If you put this seat in and have someone riding in the back and gets injured or you sell the car and someone is riding in the back and gets in an accident and becomes injured, who then becomes liable? That is something to think about especially if you live in CA::confused::bricks:.

Yeah I would be worried about rigging something up too! But what I'm doing is bolting all the stuff Honda bolts on to these same cars for use in the EU and Japanese markets. I feel pretty good about the quality as far as accidents goes; the CR-Z got excellent crash test results. A big plus is I don't drive dumb and I don't live my life thinking about stuff like that. When it's finished you won't be able to tell that it wasn't there before.

I understand that, I really do. But if someone can file a law suit and win over McDonald's coffee being hot and a burglar can sue a store owner for injury when he cuts the power line instead of the alarm line and win all I am saying is be careful. I am sure a lawyer in no time can find out USA models weren't built with a back seat and that opens a huge door- insurance companies for that matter too.

Are the seatbelt mounting points (for those of you who dissassembled the rear storage) already there? I was thinking of maybe going to grab some belts off on an honda insite and testing it out.

hello

I am owner of an european crz car with back seats and i would like to let you know that the spaces back there is very limited and designed for smal trips. it is also written in the manual book and comercial spots "the back seats can only carry not very tall adult on short distances or children on longer trips".

The worst of all this is if you plan to seat back there you have to be not only squeazed but also your neck to be bented because your head touch the celling.

Anyway its ok for me coz i can put 1 or ~2 ppl and carried them for a short distance.

What i am looking for is if there is a way to modificate the lower part of the back seat so if someone seat there at least to have his neck straight. its very important. At least 1 person in the midle. For the non back seat model i can see there are some storage spaces in the place of back seats. i wonder if there is the same space for my car under the seats so i can use it for earning a litle more height. I am planning one day to take out them to see what can i do.

Thanks for the instruction.

Hey there, yes all of the mounting points are there for the seat belts, hmm an Insight... thanks for the idea. I will test this and let you know.

Have anyone tried yet to take out the bottom of the back seat? Or at least to lift it a bit. It seems there are 2 mounting points that holding it down but i dont know how to release them. you have any adea? I marked these points in the diagram.

rear seat installation

Has anyone out there tried to install rear seats and seat belts in there Z? Any video yet? I have a supplier but before i ordered wanted to make sure it will be within my ability.

It shouldn't be a major issue to fit the rear seats and belts but why bother? There's no room behind the front seats.

Plus what are the insurance implications? Would your insurance be invalid?!

No, but you might find yourself liable if your rear passengers decide to sue you in an accident. Insurance would still cover any claim buuuuuuuuuut you could run into trouble if your had folks in rear who sustain injury.
