Skipping gears (6MT)

In another discussion about 3rd gear notchiness it was brought up that you shouldn't skip gears when shifting the 6 speed. The reasons make sense, but I wanted to start a new topic.

It's bad to skip gears when shifting because your synchros have to then catch up to a higher (or lower) speed than they were intended to work with. Is that understanding correct?

What if, during downshifting, I rev-match? I had always thought that all but negated the need for synchros altogether?

Also, what if you skip gears at lower speeds? For example, I sometimes am cruising in six at like 35mph, coming up to a turn. I brake, come up to the turn, clutch in and go into 3rd gear, rev-match and clutch out.. at this point going 15-20 or so mph. It's kind of a bad habit from when I used to beat the crap out of my old Focus.. in that case I would go into 2nd and pretend like I was driving a racecar...

i still jump gears now, but not in a forced way, i allow the shifter to go into the gear i want, and doing it slowly allows the rpms to drop to the desired range to go into gear. Like if i jump on it off the light and get up to speed by 4th i just take it out of 4th and let the rpms lower to the 6th gear range and let it slide in, i dont think that would damage anything, old habbits and warrenty make for fun driving.
As 91CRXTC said, as long as you give the gears time to slow down (i.e keeping your foot on the clutch for that extra fraction of a second), then it wouldn't have any adverse affect on your synchro life.
That is the key, you must wait for everything to catch up when skip shifting. Nothing like redlining in 2nd then slamming into 6th, your tires will outlast your transmission.
I know this thread has been quiet for a while but it seems more appropriate to pose my question here rather than start a new thread...
I'm curious about skipping gears in regards to passing on the highway. Say your cruising in 6th behind a car and you see a nice safe stretch of road and decide to pass, I havent tried it yet but I will eventually and I'm wondering if I will accelerate sufficiently if I drop to 5th or if the pass needs to be quick should I skip right to 4th...or even 3rdand give er hell????
I know my 4 speed autos will drop 4th to second on occasion at WOT but this is a bit different, my other manual car was a 1 liter chevy sprint with 68 HP so the idea of passing anybody was rediculous in that thing. I just want to know is it somewhat ok or what is recommended? Thanks!

You can skip from 6th to 3rd without a hitch, but the transmissions syncros have to work a bit harder unless you know how to blip the throttle. In the long run, if it is something you only do occasionally, I don't think you will cause any damage.
i am sure its not good for the car when u down shift from 6 to 3rd..
I am sure it does not hurt at low speed.
Agreed.

Now ... if you were going pretty fast .... :p
Don't want to over-rev the engine.

Think I might have come close once.

I was pretty tired on my way home that night ... and not quite up to practice with my shifting.

Accidentally downshifted into 2nd instead of 4th.
I'll just say that hearing the revs rocket like that was ... awakening. :scared:

But no worries, the clutch pedal has never gone down so quickly.
And the revs didn't get that high because I was actually going slow enough that I should have been in 3rd anyways. (Like I said, very tired that night.)

5th and 6th gear are both overdrives and ill-advised for passing. 4th gear is my weapon of choice. There is no danger of running out of revs in this gear for passing speeds and the IMA provides ample torque for safe egress. Anticipation negates any need for speed shifting. I frequently bypass fifth gear with no resistance.
I use the clutch in a progressive manner (as opposed to dummping it) which allows me enough time to re-clutch should I inadvertently grab second gear instead of fourth.
