Locks only work sometimes?

3064 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  supercrz
One day I went to my car and the fob wouldn't unlock it so I put my key in the door and no such luck there either. The light on the fob came on so that's not it. I figured the battery in the car was dead and my lock mechanism was busted. A week later I called AAA to have them come and give me a new battery and I went out to see if I could get the hood open from the outside while I was waiting and the remote unlocked the car no problem and so did the key in the door. What is going on here? Is this a known issue or some one in a million fluke? And can I stop it from happening again?

TLDR: One day I can't unlock car, a week later I can.

It might not unlock the passenger or hatch but The key should unlock your drivers door by inserting it in the keyhole and turning it clockwise whether the remote is working or not. It's mechanical.

Maybe it's the door handle/latch that's going bad, which makes it appear to be locked. I had the same problem a couple times one day, and then the symptoms disappeared.

The locking mechanism in the door works perfectly fine. However the one day both the mechanism and the remote stopped working. This leads me to believe that
A) The mechanism in the door is not in fact mechanical, but requires the RFID signature in the key to unlock, in witch case it is simply a two step switch that controls a servo, much like the remote would do.
and
B) There is a relay that controls the operation of the locking servo through both the key and the remote and that it is failing intermittently.

I can't find a wiring diagram that confirms this so I was wondering if anybody else understands why both systems would fail simultaneously and intermittently.
Also it isn't just the door handle because the lights flash when the car is unlocked and you would be able to hear the lock moving.

Oh yes, I was going to ask if the lights flashed and/or you could hear the lock mechanism actuating....

Check out page 22-148, after downloading the PDF of the service manual above. I haven't had time to follow/understand the diagram myself, but check it out, and see if it helps. Follow up with us, if you find your answer, and share. :)
Could it be the door actuator? Both of the actuators on each of my doors have been replaced.
