Just a warning regarding anyone thinking of purchasing tires/rims in the US and riding them into Canada without declaring them to Canada customs.

I was just in the US yesterday night (for a few hours) to pick-up a few grocery items and was stopped and held at the Customs office for about an hour as they thought my new rims/tires were purchased in the US and I was trying to smuggle them into Canada.

So anyway, I drove up to the customs officer and answered the usual questions, where you went, total value of goods, etc... But then he asks about the car, is it yours (yes), how long have you had it (2 years) and then he gives me a yellow card and told me to go to the office and line up on the 'A' line. So I park and walk in and waiting for me at the desk was a customs agent and the first thing he says to me is to remove my jacket, lift my shirt, empty my pockets, lift my pants to see my sock tops and they even looked through my wallet and to unlock my phone and to give him my pass-code. Then he asks is there any contraband (drugs, alcohol) or firearms, weapons or anything sharp in the car... huh??? I do have a pocket knife in the glove box and told the officer. Then he tells me to sit down and wait... at this time I am totally lost and freaking out... The worst is that they kept like EVERYTHING, my car keys, wallet, phone, passport and receipts while they checked over my car. I totally felt like I was arrested!! Ok, perhaps I was, kinda but at least not behind bars!

So here I am, just sitting in the waiting area worried what might happen next....

So from the waiting area, I look out of the window to my car and the customs officer goes out and is joined by others and a dog too, and they check out my car, looking everywhere! Under the car, doors all open, trunk and even the engine bay... the works!!

Then he comes back in and asks about the rim and tires (aha!!) and I tell him that I purchased them in Vancouver a month ago but just mounted them on Monday night (2 days ago) right after my wheel alignment on that same day and that the reason why I waited so long is due to the new lowered springs that I purchased 2 weeks ago waiting for them to settle. I then proceeded to show him on my phone a PDF copy of the receipt i had online (thank God for Dropbox!) as I needed it to send it to Continental for a rebate.

After that, he again went back out to my car where the other officers were and I waited again.

Then he comes back again, this time with the officer who I first talked to when I drove up, and they both apologize for detaining me, gives me back all my stuff and that I was free to go. No duty or taxes on my $200 grocery purchases???

I then said what did I do wrong? and they tell me that I should have told them about my new tires and rims and I should have kept the receipt in my car. huh??? I say that I don't usually keep receipts in the car as I tend to lose and ruin them if they stay in the glove box. I mean, does anyone keep car receipts in your car? Anyway, I also ask them why didn't they just ask me as I drove up and why all the searching and keeping me in the dark? Apparently modified cars (and me being Asian I am sure) is usually connected with illegal drug, alcohol and firearm importation.

At that I just said "thanks" and left. :iough:

What an experience.. this is a first for me. I do hope my record is updated that I was improperly detained! Although I doubt that will happen. Driving home, I began to wonder what if I didn't have a copy of the receipt online???

What an experience you went through! You're lucky that you just happened to have a receipt in Dropbox.
Actually, it isn't dropbox that I should be thankful for, but this forum!! LOL!!

It just dawned on me that I have pictures and posts on here that are date stamped so I could have used this forum as a place to show when I purchased the tires. Its because of all of you here always saying "Pics or didn't happen" that I always try to remember to take pics.

Thank you all!!
Wow - to be honest, those are usually the stories reserved for people crossing over INTO the USA.

Sorry this happened to you.
Wonder if we'll see you featuring in an episode of "Border Secruity"???
(I've not seen the show, but heard about it - after hearing what they see and find, I'm not at all surprised that they have their suspicions about people - and yes even stereotyping).

Still, not a pleasant experience. Glad you got through it keeping your cool, and that it worked out reasonably OK in the end. Also glad they apologized - 'tis the Canadian thing to do, after all.
Don't know about the show "Border Security", but didn't see any cameras, unless they were hidden somewhere.

As for the apology, they were quite honest and sincere about the whole thing so I really can't blame them.. This is their job. I am sure there are times when they actually do find someone bringing in illegal firearms and stuff and they do have to be defensive.

Although, in the end, I have to say that they did treat me fair and well, but I must admit that I was kinda scared for a time there. Mind you, I always declare everything so I know that I didn't have anything to hide.

Just goes to show that honesty is the best policy, especially at the border crossing.

Anyway, just wanted to warn anyone who are even contemplating trying to sneak stuff through customs into Canada... it ain't worth it.
Woah, I'll be possibly going up to Vancouver in a few weeks for vacation. Thanks for the heads up, means a lot to me since I'm an international student. Let's hope they won't harass me with some "stuff".
I had the same thing done to me, when I was going into Canada, simply because I told them I was going to teach a service class to Canadian service techs. I seems that I needed a work visa to teach a one day class, and was denied entry. I said "thank you"..as now my company did not have to pay for my stay or time in Canada, and simply required a dozen service techs to come down to the states for class. They paid into US coffers instead. Ain't bureaucracy grand?
so where was the drugs? :rotfl::rotfl:

If it was up to me, in my tires or in the door/side panels. ;) I think I saw that in a movie...
(True story) A friend of mine showed me about 60lbs of opium bricks under the panels in his jeep. He's been in jail for 3 years now on unrelated charges. I sometimes wonder what happened to that jeep!
My cousin was just telling me that I should move to Washington with him. One of the awesomeness of moving other than the scenery and less taxes was that we could drive over to Canada for the weekend to party where some of the most beautiful ladies reside. Sorry.. This was sort of unrelated ha ha
Maybe that's why they detain good looking American men with style from driving up in such a sexy little car... To conserve their wimenz.

I know someone who got caught with drugs in the panels of their jeep too! He said he was set up or something. He's out now. I don't think panels are a very good hiding spot anymore. Not that I have anything to hide...
Customs officers in Canada land can be a holes sometimes
Wow... that happened to me too... I normally go through Rainbow (Niagara Falls) and come back on Peace bridge because Rainbow custom officers are dicks also most retail smuggling happens there because of the outlet malls. This time, I declared everything but some stuff didnt have receipt as I bought them online months ago but I did declare the correct value (approx, not down to the penny). They (3 officers) searched my car, emptied my pockets and patted me down, unlocked my phone and the whole 9yards.

I was shocked, it was the first time that has ever happened to me as well. Even though Rainbow officers are dicks, I was never searched like that before. I think they're on high alert since stupid ISIS threatened Canada... Mofos causing everyone problems....
Personally, it may be the ISIS thing, but for us here in British Columbia, I am thinking its because of the new marijuana law in Washington State. Its now legal to purchase and sell it in WA state and I know of a few people here who go down there for it.
That's bull****. The phone unlocking thing especially. Are you sure that you're required by law to do that? I'd check.

Nope... I can guarantee that it aint bull****. The officer actually had me take off my jacket, empty my pockets in front of him, lift my shirt, lift my pant leg to see the tops of my socks and had me pull out my pockets to show it was really empty. He also wanted my phone unlocked and to let him know my unlock code. Apparently they are allowed to ask you do this and you are required by law to assist and let them know this info. If you don't comply, I am sure you will be in more trouble.

If you refuse they can't charge you with anything. However, they can keep your phone until they find out what's on it which could mean indefinitely. They will also probably detain you for a while to get you to rethink your decision. (This is US, I assume Canada has similar procedures)

I presume I could have refused the phone unlock, but wouldn't that mean that I was hiding something from them? I mean, I would probably look like someone really bad in their eyes and also have some sort of mark on my record for not being cooperative. Which would, in turn, affect any future crossings??

I think its just better to be open and cooperate with them as I really don't need that kind of problem in the future.
