Manual or Automatic?

Any errors or warning on the dash?

If 'yes' get them read properly and report back with full code details.

You probably need someone with an Honda HDS OBDII diagnostic to plug in an monitor what is going on with the transmission.
The workshop manual also contains an extensive diagnostic section for the CVT, it's a complicated beast.

Could be.

Broken cvt belt.
Broken shifter mechanism.
Something else.

You might need to take it to Honda if you haven't got anyone local with the right facilities, knowledge and tools.

based on what you described it sounds like your CVT is dead.

Does it do anything when you try to engage low mode? Put the shifter in D and pull back on both paddles for ~5 seconds until L flashes on the dash.

Not CR-Z specific, but this exact same thing happened to me in my cvt Altima 5-6 years ago.

Got in the car and it would rev all it wanted, but it wouldnt engage into gear.

Transmission was toast after I hit the mother of all potholes and it wacked the CVT valve bodies.

I wont lie to you, its a crappy problem because almost no shops out there are trained or want to deal with CVT repair. Its too complicated to fix when a new trans can just be ordered and popped in. Unfortunately its not the most economical solution.

You will likely have to get the whole transmission replaced. Sorry.

Have you checked the Fluid level? As for the above posting that is all gloom and doom and IMO not helpful. There are shops that can repair a CVT. The issue is they are difficult to find. You want an independent Transmission specialist who actually cares. Considering the age there may not be any warranty on it but do some research and talk to a Honda Dealer. There are also lots of used ones available.

As for manually putting it in Low or any gear manually I doubt it will do anything different than using it the usual way. It is obvious something has failed. The issue is finding out what and having it repaired. There is no connection currently between the transmission and the drive wheels. The hope is it lost all the fluid and it can be refilled and driven. If not that then it needs a specialist who has a clue.

Sorry! Didnt mean to be doom and gloom!

I think it was the flashbacks to when that happened to me. It left quite a hole in my wallet.

Yeah I definitely agree there may be someone who can fix it. Im sure more shops have started repairing cvts since the time when that happened to me.

In my case i called quite a few shops around and no one wanted to touch it without just outright replacing it.

There are many more CVTs in use now. I also find it interesting this is your only postings. Do you even have a Honda CR-Z?

Fully agree with you.

I do! 2012 chugging steady at 109k miles now. Ive really just been lurking for a while, since i used to spend most of my time in the miata forum. But I sold my miata recently so I decided to be a bit more active in this forum.

I think what really prompted me to finally make an account was the fact that I had the same experience with a cvt issue as OP has right now.

Ill post some pics in the welcome thread soon to alleviate any concerns.

Yes I do I’ve had the car for 3 plus years and no problem like I said was just at a light no wierd noises no fluid loss and the car just wouldn’t move I am deff going to have it checked out it would go into low mode but nothing is moving it just revs when the gas is hit obv honestly I was just reaching out to see if anyone maybe expiernced the same thing and it was something foolish instead of shelling out money for a repair I appreciate all the help I think I am going to try a mobile mechanic to atleast come out and see if it can get a read off it..I replaced the battery a few months ago like I said I’ve had no issues with the car yet so was hoping it would be something stupid ! I will update once I have an official diagnosis

I have one

Your posting was honest and I believed you. MrBananaHump I did not and he was not helpful. You have an issue and I have not seen it before. He polluted your thread. Suggestions to use Low or other manual settings for the transmission as i said will not do anything as you have proven. You have a real honest transmission issue that will need diagnosis and repair by a reputable knowledgeable shop with a clue about CVTs. Only thing as i said i would check would be fluid level if low add the correct fluid if not then it needs the diagnosis.

I have been to Firestone where they would walk past my female friend and give me status updates on her car. It even happened when she brought in car a half hour before I arrived.
