DIY front LED strip

This is quite an easy mod - really a collection of a couple of mods already known. Bear in mind that certain colors (and flashing lights of the front) may well be illegal for on-road use in your jurisdiction!

I bought one of those "Knight Rider" LED strips, although this one actually has multiple colors and lighting configurations. I fitted it in front of the rubber seal that sits under the hood when it's closed. I popped the plastic clips off, then attached the strip using 3M tape, then replaced the rubber seal. This ensured that it was held firmly in place and wasn't pushing anything out of alignment.

It comes with a small black radio receiver that I mounted under the left side of the fender, also with 3M tape.

Drilled a hole through into the engine bay (I have a CVT so used the hole where the clutch stuff would go). Then threaded a wire through, spliced it to the positive of the receiver. The negative wire was grounded.

Screw in place where hole was drilled:

Screw seen from other side:

In the cabin, the wire was connected to a toggle switch I installed into the unused plastic cover next to the driver, that in Europe has a couple of switches on it. It was a tight squeeze but the switch fit - you could use smaller buttons if you want.

The other end then went to a fuse extender connected to fuse number 4 - for me this is always on.

Put everything back in place - it looks nice and tidy. Viola :D

:eek:mg: Daaaaaaaaaaaaaang! That looks awesome. Don't forget to post some night shots!
Forget night shots, we need video! Show us what you can do.
I'll try to get a video done i think... The strips have 25+ patterns and 7 colors. One of my favorites is "pulsing" where it stays one color and goes from dim to bright over and over. I pretend it's breathing

This is the first vid I did when I dry-fitted the LED's prior to doing the full install. I connected the wires to the battery terminals to check everything worked. You can hear the clicking of the radio remote.

More pics and a night video!

Spot the deliberate mistake...the yellow I called green, then when it went to the real green I called it yellow... Oops.

Damn dude, that is awesome! Next you will have your car talk and transform. Nice choice for the switch. :)
I can so see why most of that is illegal while driving. And yet so very cool. :)

thats crazii man. :D would like to see the video on this.

Video is on the Flickr links in a couple of the earlier posts... :)
i wonder if this be modified into the 3rd rear brake light?
Could be. The brand I bought had three extra wires in addition to the two main power lines. One lit up the left side amber, one right amber, the third lit the entire bar red. They were for splicing into indicators and brake lights, obviously ;)

When I triggered the "brake" light it actually flashed the light 2-3 times then went solid red.

Where did you buy this from? I was curious if its the one I've been looking at.
Got it from Amazon - there are a few variants though.

Amazon.com: Led Knight Rider 7 Color 48 SMD Scanning LED 22": Everything Else
These are the ones I have been looking at ORACLE LED Scanner Bars. They look just about the same and have the same functions.

Both are controlled via a wireless remote and should be using the same hardware. I am curious if the Oracle LED bar has the options for the brake lights and turn signals. Aside from that, the the only major difference I can see is price.

So many fuses in these cars. Looks like a candy shop!
Amazing Job man. Love your car
