I could be wrong. But to me it seems like both sport mode and eco mode will more aggressively charge/deplete the battery than normal mode will. For the reason I tend to drive in normal mode most of the time. To hopefully prolong the life of the battery.

Sport mode: I don't care about how much MPG I get. This is run when I want to actually feel the car. (I normally don't even use 6th when I use sport mode)
Normal mode: I'm just relaxing, going to the store or some errand. . . something I'm not in a hurry for, or just don't really care in general.
Econ: Trips, trying to chill, ALWAYS when I hit cruise control (unless a very hilly road/hw)

edit: I also sometime switch between the 3 like a mad man according to the situation
