Over at cleanmpg they spent a week with a CR-Z 6-speed. One of the points taken fro reading the review is this newest Honda hybrid uses the electric assist much less and maintains a battery charge much better than the Civic or Insight.

Owning a Civic I received the update letter. Looks like it mostly targets those who drive short city trips in hot climates. In such conditions the battery may overheat often and force deplete itself. Repeating this over and over probably isn't good for the battery life. The solution Honda has is to slow the regen at times such as first starting out when your car has been sitting in 100 degree sun all day.

Less regen = less battery charge = less electric assist = more load on the gas engine = lower city MPG'.
