Unfortunately (for gas milage at least) cars have gotten much heavier over the past decade or so. Much higher safety standards, NVH reduction measures, and options have all driven up weight.
A Geo Metro from the late eighties (for example) got close to fifty MPG. A Metro wouldn't be your car of choice if you had to be in an accident, though.
