this is what I did and it's the best way to carry(and the safest) a bike on this car
Did you ever post a pick? I am currently in the market for a bike rack. I’m leaning toward installing the hitch kind. I’m still undecided though.Thule's new 9001 Raceway 2 rack is pretty awesome. Very solid mount, rubber wrapped steel cable connects to the hooks, and it's lockable. Probably going to pick one up soon, I'll take pics of it when it's on.

I know. I’m not sure I could lift my bike to the roof since mines a mountain bike. So that option is out for me. I really want the tow hitch style rack but am reading some issues and the cost is quite high to install it all. I’ve seen the Thule 9001PRO. Looks pretty nice.Depending on what kind of Bike and what kind of rack if you search on this forum there was many a thread on the fact the roof can support a maximum of 100 Lbs and also remember the roof on a CR-Z is very short.
Hey, do you still have this set up?Here are the promised pics. I drove it about 5 miles after I attached it, and its very very stable on this car, even more so then it was on my SUV. Great solution for those looking for something that is easily removable.

Can anyone attest to this? Did you trunk door body panels bend or get damages by truck bike mounts that use straps hooked to the door seams?riiiiiight
Ooook
I think I've seen enough of potential damage for a life time.
I've been working in sporting goods for almost 15 years, and in an actual bike shop for about 5 years. Let me break this down for everyone.
The strap on bike racks will damage your paint and potentially damage the body of the car due to the bike moving back-and-forth from the wind. If you go this cheap route, I hope you have a ton of money for the body shop.
The roof rack is by far thee most versatile system to go with. Bikes, kayaks, cargo carriers, heck I've hauled lumber. On this particular car however, the large rear hatch and the small roof combination cause SOME issues. Many bike mounts extend too far back and interfere with the hatch opening. If you can deal with the price and the hatch limitation, the roof rack is the best way to go.
The easiest way to go is have a hitch installed and get a hitch rack. The best rack I have used is from 1UpUSA. It is all aluminum and stainless steel, plus it can take ANY type of bike. I myself am going to be purchasing the new Thule T2 Pro rack which is able to take any type of bike including my fatbike AND has built in locks. The bike is locked to the rack. The rack is locked to the car. Problem solved.
Let me know if you guys have any questions. I've been doing this for years.
