auto stop in neutral

This may be a dumb question but definitely interested in asking.

Is there a way to make the CRZ engine auto shut off whenever going into neutral for a few seconds despite the speed?

Is there a ECU mod or aftermarket piggyback ecu/tune that would let me do this?

Would save so much gas instead of having to be under 18mph and foot on brake.

I never use the 'Auto Stop'. Mainly STOP signs where I live.
I put the 'defroster (FRONT) button to ON, push the A/C to OFF. That is it.
The auto stop will NEVER engage now. The system remains in this mode until you change it, even after shutting the car off and re starting it.

Even in the summer with the A/C on the cold air comes out of the defroster and sinks downward cooling the interior nicely.

A little annoying in the winter with the heat on as the hot defroster air dries my eyes out, so have to use a different mode then.

You don't need to fiddle with the front defroster on the 6MT, just downshift to first with the clutch depressed and the engine doesn't auto-stop. Useful for 30 MPH zone stop signs. But I like auto-stop in general. I would hate wasting gas at a stop-light for no reason.

No guys... Fobx530 wants more autostop.

And, no, there is no way to do it.

The reason why autostop is not more active is because the CR-Z needs engine-braking to charge the battery. Even with the engine off, the A/C, the radio, the lights and every thing still draw current. The charge of the battery will drop significantly faster. As a result of low battery charge, the engine will have to run longer to get it back to proper operating levels.

More or less...

I'm confused.
6MT out of gear neutral, or CVT "N" shifter position?
6MT, would mean that the engine would shut off every time you shift, in your world.
CVT actually does activate Auto Stop in neutral, but only at the slow speed. And the CVT should not coast for long distances on N.

Basically, what Varmint said is absolutely right - IMA recharge stops when the engine does. Demand for power does not. When "coasting" in gear, the battery is frequently in a slight recharge mode, which you would lose if the engine were to go to Auto Stop. Same goes for coasting long distances out of gear or foot on the clutch.
There is no way to do that - auto-stop only activates under 18 mph (6MT). But you can stay in auto-stop when above 18 mph! If you are going down a hill... enter auto-stop, stay in neutral, maintain minimal brake pressure, let the speed increase. I've reached >60mph this way (long, steep hill).

I like autostop, a lot :)

I'm not talking about autostopping every time I'm in neutral from shifting gear. I'm talking if I place it in neutral for more than say...2 seconds; and it does not take more than 2 seconds to shift gear. If it does take you more than that, you sir, are a very dangerous driver.

My battery is always full, I sit in traffic quite a bit and stay in gear to help braking and regen. I only go into neutral until I REALLY have to, meaning, I'm VERY close to the car in front for stop and go traffic.

But I'm actually interested in auto shut off at higher speed. In a Prius, I would drive up to about 75mph, then "trick the engine to turn off" and coast until about 55mph. This hypermilling technique helps me get phenomenal MPG.

Thus was curious if it was possible. But there's no after market computer, or ECU programming to do this?

I know the Z is not a Prius but worth a try.

Thank God it's not a Prius or I wouldn't have bought one. Not to be rude, but the Prius has to be the ugliest car I've ever seen, along with the boxy Honda Element, Scion xb, and Kia Soul.
fobx530,

As far as I know, there is no such modification. I've seen pruises do that spurt and glide thing all the time... frankly it causes traffic problems, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks who don't do that with other cars around. Going 20 miles per hour too slow is just as unsafe as going 20 mph too fast, and driving unpredictably can cause problems, so try to avoid that technique around other drivers we share the roads with.

However, that technique will benefit mileage on cars without auto stop. Just not quite as much. The CR-Z is not going to get quite the mileage of a Pruis, but it gets great mileage and is a better car in other respects, so I feel the tradeoff works much better.

It would be cool if someone out there found a way to do this with a stickshift, perhaps with an S+ button that auto stopped when held and restarted when lifted. I just worry that most drivers won't handle the technique in a courteous way.
Replying to old post but a push button and a relay killing power to the injectors will kill the engine. Far as i know thats how older insights did it. Not sure how it would stsrt up though. Maybe with clutch pedal pushed and pushing it into gear would cause auto start to work. You can also just wire in a momentary switch in paralell to your brake or clutch pedal to make it think you are on the brakes. This works for forced full regen without having to apply any input to the brake pedal.
