So the other day the CR-Z stared to do something funny with the brakes. When braking normally on a dry surface, the brakes sometimes feel like the ABS turns on for a few pumps. The brake pedal feels like a buz for maybe 1/2 a second.

Could it be one of the sensors?

Any idea how to troubleshoot this?

I would check all the ABS wheel sensors/wiring and activation rings and ensure all clean/undamaged etc.

If the fault consistently happens in the future you will need an HDS to watch the ABS wheel speed sensors etc to see what is happening.

The ABS/VSA module also has a habit of failing in these cars so this may be a hint yours is on the way out.

Thanks for the advice. it makes sense.

Does the HDS have a menu item for reading individual wheel sensors?

HDS and clones will read individual wheel speed sensors. They can also display them in graph format. Easier to spot issues with the signal.

I had a smart fortwo for a while that cracked a tone ring on a rear corner. That extra 0.5mm gap on one tooth caused all kinds of problems with ABS and VSA.

CR-Z uses magnetic encoders on the wheel bearing dust cap. Not likely to crack but they do collect debris that interfere. And if you live in the rust belt the ABS sensors like to expand with rust slowing killing them.

Rust and magnetic dust collecting on sensors and tone wheels is a problem as old as we've been using them on cars. It was a very common failure point on chevy trucks for decades, cleaning them was a usually easy fix if the hold sensor retaining bolt wasn't completely seized
