2009 V-Star 950. I can get up to 45mpg on it but usually closer to 40 since I like to ride WOT a lot. It will be nice to have the option to take the car on a rainy/cold day and still get similar mpg.

I can't imagine having this car w/o a stick (no offense to those with the CVT, I know the 3 pedals aren't for everyone for one reason or another)

But I wonder if the hyper-milers are 6mt - there is more to work with when you have the manual.

LOL. And I don't care how much faster electric start is than crank. I prefer the crank start because it makes me feel more like a man.

Could be.Tactics like putting the car in neural and coasting to a stop, going down a hill, less moving parts, ect. do increase the efficiency of a manual for sure. But that benefit can easily be overcome by putting the gas down more, which I believe any three pedal manual car make you want to do. But autos have been improved greatly over the years. Semi trucks are moving to autos as well because of better MPG lol.

Automatics vs manual (in regard to three pedal manual cars) ARE the future, both MPG and racing. Look at the new Genesis, they are putting 8 gears in it just like Lexus has. Some more facts:

2012 Volkswagen GTI 2.0L
Auto: 24 city, 33 highway
Manual: 21 city, 31 highway

2011 Ford Fiesta 1.6L:
Auto: 29 city, 38 highway
Manual: 28 city, 37 highway

The GTI shows a "rated" difference of 3 mpg city and 2 mpg hwy and I can tell you this, no matter how good that DSG is (if that's what it has) in a fun little hot hatch, I would FOR SURE want the manual, period. The difference is NOT enough to sway me, actually, when I say there's no replacement for that 3rd pedal, think about it, there really, really isn't

IIRC though, the Jetta TDI gets better hwy mileage with the stick though, going 795 miles on the freeway compared to 743 miles with their auto.

I'm not sure if you can short shift the CVT (I know my friend's Jetta will not let you shift up below ~2,000 RPM) but I think driving our 6MT easily, shifting around ~1800 RPM, skipping to 6th, etc. gives it an edge over the CVT when it comes to MPG.

Our CVTs ride at like 1100 RPM in econ mode, and econ generally forces auto. in normal and sport, we can still ride WELL below 1800 RPM in manual mode.
