You guys are comedy lol. I caved in because she came up with the great point that I need a designated driver sometimes. I told her it's probably safer for me to drive drunk than let a girl drive my car
. Kidding of course. I started her off in a parking lot that has a very slight down hill slope so she could practice letting off the clutch slowly to see where it grabs. After she got comfortable with that we went to a flatter area where she could use the gas. We found that in econ mode it's a little too restrictive and caused her to stall a couple times. Normal works fine because the gas responsive without being to sensitive. She's coming along for only having had 3 15 minute sessions. 15 minutes is about all I can stand at one time before I start yelling lol. I'll keep you guys posted.

Well everyone is different in learning stick shift... Ive always driven standard every single car but learning first wasnt hard stalled twice and grinded a gear once.... cant say the same for your gf. Id ask a friend that has an old stick shift beater to let her try it out first lol

Yea right.. one can always rationalize.. But then again.. after 100 years of being married, I can say my better half has saved my bacon by being the designated driver.. Let her learn.. not going to really hurt anything on your CR-Z. Some grinds here and there are not going to really hurt - except when you hear and feel it in the passenger seat. |

I'd tell her to spend 500$ on a P.O.S. and learn from that.
also, every car's clutch is different. so it's more about learning the basics than learning the "clutch". shifting gears while driving is easy. it's the 1st gear start that they need to do at least 20 times. and then there's that uphill 1st gear start that always gets your heart pumping the first time you have to do it and the guy behind you is right up on your bumper lol. |

First make her practice the shifts and clutching with the car off. Once you see she has the hang of that find a nice lonely stretch of downhill road. A gentle slope, not a massive hill!!!! Let her practice downhill first, it will be easier for her and the Z.
Because of how nice the transmission is on our cars, I believe it's one of the easier vehicles to teach some one how to drive a stick. I taught my wife in about half an hour, back in '88 in my 1985 CRX-Si. As always, if you are captured, or killed, I will disavow all knowledge of your actions. Your milage may vary... Edit: sorry late to the party, how's the clutch? Last edited by Enderg; 10-30-2011 at 03:25 PM. Reason: Late to the party? |

Just say no. Unless she agrees in writing to replace your grinded transmission.

Ive tried and failed. I got about a full day in teaching my old lady how to drive stick and she STILL cannot figure out how to do things. Shes been watching me do it for 4 years and STILL doesn't understand the dynamics of manual driving. Idk whether she is just retarded or doesn't want to learn.
