Default Transmission Fluid Change - $149 :0

Just to set it up, my CR-Z EX MT has a little under 6000 miles. Did a cross country trip from Philly to LA. I read somewhere that it is a good idea to do both an oil change and transmission fluid change. Already did the oil change upon arrival but now thinking it might be a good idea to do a transmission fluid change. Called a dealer and said it will cost $149 + Tax. Does it really cost this much or should I even bother and just wait till maintenance schedule?

Thanks

Wait until scheduled maintenance. The gear oil in there is just getting "broking in" at 6k miles

You changed your oil too soon as well. The break in oil should be left in until at least 8500 miles.

well, the theory is that like the motor the Transmission has a break in period. During this period there may be metal shavings etc in the fluid. Some advocate changing it but for the most part a lot of cars dont get this done until the service interval. Its up to you whether you want to change it.

I know the TSX transmission didnt like any other fluid but the one supplied by Honda. If you bring it to another shop to get it changed I would suggest you stop by a honda parts department, buy the fluid and bring it to the shop yourself unless someone can shed light on the different fluids and what will be safe.

I dont remember what my last one cost me.

Yeah, it's this metal shaving that I heard about that got me thinking. Anyway I'm also concerned since my first 1000 miles was really my "practice" with driving stick. I'll think about it some more. Thanks for the feedback.

My Honda Tech friend told me the same thing, but I changed my oil at 6000 VERY HARD DRIVING miles.

What's the worst you can do by changing your oil and fluids more frequently? I heard it was better for the car. Than again I could be wrong.

I think it makes more of a difference when you have an automatic tranny compared to a manual. I think with a manual its basically just for lubing the gears and such as to an automatic its using the fluid for pressure and lube so it should be changed every 15k miles or so. I could be wrong and if so shed some light on me...

Oh, I didn't realize it was for an Automatic transmission. Yeah, that's about right @ 150 bucks. Yet another reason I buy manuals. I can do the crap myself in 10 minutes and it costs like 10 bucks.
