Default Reverse Grinding (6MT)

Have you guys noticed that if you put your car in Reverse before your car completly stops, the gear grinds even if your clutch is fully pressed?

I found this annoying. if I want to do any kind of quick forward and reverse (parking reverse, making a u turn) I keep grinding my gears because I have a habit of putting in reverse while the car is still rolling forward.

is this same with any Honda 6MT cars? any solutions?

it's really bad to put it into reverse before the car is fully stopped.

it's probably a honda tradition.

The reason it grinds it that the transmission is still rotating for a bit even after you have pushed in the clutch. Reverse gear does not syncro to help match the shaft speeds like all the forward gears do and if the trans is rotating and you try to put it into reverse it grinds.

If you don't want it to grind when going into reverse make sure you have stopped rolling before engaging the clutch. Or put the gear lever into another gear after you have stopped before putting into reverse.

LOL that means that there are no syncros in reverse. I don't know of any MT that has syncros in reverse. Syncros in first are a luxury as well. K

The clutch disengages the tranny from the engine, not the wheels, so putting it in reverse while still moving is always going to be unpleasant as the tranny is still turning.
Same for any MT as far as I know, regardless of manufacturer, no synchro on reverse.
You just need to break that habit!

First noticed this in my '82 Chevette, continued grinding in the '91 S-10, '05 Kia Spectra5, and now in the '11 CR-Z...I found out in my Chevette that if you try to pull the E-brake to stop the car faster to slam the car into reverse, it will actually fall apart...don't try that at home!!

I have owned a 2001 VW Passat and 2006 Audi A3. Both MT, both allowed shifting into reverse while still gently rolling.

Some cars are more forgiving than others. It's not only the fact that reverse doesn't have a synchro, but reverse also has straight cut gears. That's why it grinds because 9 times out of 10 the teeth don't line up perfectly and will grind a little bit.

The easiest way to avoid is to take a the extra second and come to a complete stop and then put it in reverse.

Not sure what you mean about synchros in first being a luxury. Any modern car has them, most cars even have triple cone synchros on first.
