I was always wondering the same thing. 2nd gear feels clunky or as if it takes two "clicks" so to speak to shift into. All the other gears are smooth as can be. Kinda made me want to test drive another manual CRZ to see if it was just my car or not.

Could be you, clutch is tricky in 1st and 2nd. Sometimes when I'm being careless going into second I get that, but not usually. The gearbox is amazing on this car, when I'm WOT and bang second quickly, it actually bangs lol. Oh snap broken neck.
lol

Some good advice a fellow member told me from the UK on the forum here.
Press the clutch in all the way to the floor, then shift. Seems trivial, but it made a HUGE difference for me. I found out before, I was shifting ever so slightly right before the clutch hit the floor and it would jerk when i released the clutch. Not just from 1st to 2nd, but I was doing this in the other gears as welll!! However, 1st to 2nd seemed the most problematic. I was being sloppy and rushing into gears and not paying attention. Once I realized this, my shifting has been flawless since. Sometimes we press the clutch in enough we think, but not far enough! So, press that clutch in till it hits the floor and goes thud, then shift and release the clutch. See how that improves. You'll notice the shifter go in smoother and the car not jerk. I hope this helps! It did wonders for me.

I've only heard of jerky ride on first gear since it's the hardest gear due to needing fluid control of clutch action. My understanding is first gear is meant to get your vehicle moving and rest of gears are to increase your momentum. jcarmin....with more practice and re-training yourself with manual shifting; your shifting should smooth out. It's all about timing. Remember to ease off of the gas pedal and depress clutch completely then up shift...slightly pressurize gas pedal at same time releasing clutch. First gear is only gear you really need to be concerned about easing off clutch but every gears after, from my experience, you could just release in a fluid manner as fast as you want. I know you stated only second gear giving you problem and I went on and on with shifting techniques. Jerky ride in second gear usually occurs if you depress your clutch suddenly while the gas pedal is still depress. Therefore eased off of gas pedal while smoothly depressing clutch. Follow as stated above, you should with practice, get your timing down where you will not experience jerky ride. Needless to say, I do not experience what you are experiencing. Good luck.
