I have the red LEDs from iJDMToy arriving today or tomorrow for map, doors & cargo lights. It was still pitch black when I left for work this morning and I thought the OEM lights were already bright enough, so the red LEDs might be overpowering. I'll have to wait and see.
EDIT: got the LEDs in the mail yesterday, put them in this morning. I'll get a pic tonight or tomorrow night. |

I have a black CR-Z. Still haven't gotten pictures, I'll get them tonight. Sorry about that.
The red LEDs look great at night. They're not overpoweringly bright, it's the perfect amount of light imho. |

I took pictures from my cellphone with both the flash on and off, and both times you couldn't see the red light. I know I'm deviating a little, but it's something to do with the color red being at the end of the visible light spectrum. I painted my dining room red a year ago, and I swear it took 4 or 5 coats, an entire gallon of red paint to cover the walls on a 12' x 14' room. Ridiculous.
Anyways, here's a picture from iJDMtoy. The dome lights are not that bright, even if you stare directly at them. If you put your finger over the dome lights in the picture, the amount of red in the car is basically what the picture shows. I think the amount of red is perfect...not overpowering so you have to squint, not too little so you can't see anything.

Just for kicks, get a red LED flashlight and go into a dark basement. You'll see things completely differently. Things are a lot clearer, to me anyways.
I leave work at 5:30am and the OEM lights were too bright for my groggy arse. |

Physiologically, red does not affect night vision which is why it's common in dark control centers. Blue is easier for the human eye to see at night, hence the use of blue lights on police vehicles. Obviously, white light reduces your NV. Yes, you can see better in the light and colors are truer but try a white flashlight, turn it off and see how long it takes for your eyes to adjust, then try it with a red light.
