Default Cyber Security News-n-Stuff

This is a discussion on Cyber related threats. An open discussion in which everyone is encouraged to post if they have news or information on new threats. But, lets keep it on topic.

OK, lets start off with QR codes.

One of the latest scanning technologies. It can embed any type of information, Text, URLs and other information. The above Code is an http address to my facebook page or do you trust me that it is? Scan it with your phone and will take you there or where?. Anyone can do this and as always, there is an effort by "Bad Actors" to exploit this technology by taking you where you may not want to go.

Here is an article that may help shed some light on on the subject.

I never felt quite right about these and never used them. I've never heard of them being used by scammers.

Great to know!

(and I have no idea where your code would send me, I didn't scan it!)

In this case, the QR code is actually to my Facebook page.. but the point is that unless one is really paying attention, it can take you....

Why is it that someone always has to try to screw up a good idea?
It's like cyber-jihad. They, like their real-world counterparts, never BUILD anything, or make something better. They just destroy things. The irony is, both in their real and cyber existances, the best outcome they can hope for is to reduce everything to poverty and anarchy. How do thinking people believe this to be a good idea? Oh, wait, I think I just answered my own question.

Thanks, Scotty. I always wondered when someone was going to hijack these. Next, they'll attack legitimate adverts, and the only change will be to alter the QR code. Imagine someone scanning the code for what they think is their bank's new e-commerce site, to get taken to a psudo-banking looking pfishing site instead. Or a politician's QR taking you to an XXX site!

They are called QR Code Apps or QR Code Readers and are available for Android and iPhone. I installed the app on my Android, but never used it. It isn't on my iPhone.

My favorite description of QR codes (can't remember where I read it) is that they look like robot barf.

They're just like any clickable link, though, from a security standpoint. Trusting the link source is important, but the real issue is whether the program/browser/OS you're using can handle the security threat.
