I was asleep on the couch when the alarm clock went off and I was waking up to the news the first tower was hit. I thought it was a dream at first. I turned on the TV and couldn't believe it. I latter found out a classmate from high school was killed at the Pentagon. His name was Robert Tolbert. Once I found out it was terrorists I almost went back in the military just so I could shoot at someone I was so angry. Please share your memories of that day and anybody that was lost so they can be honored. I would all so like to hear from those across the world and how their country reacted and thought when the news hit. I don't want to hear any conspiracy theories or anything like that. Any posts of such nature will be immediately deleted.

My husband was heading to VA for AT and a friend called me to meet her for breakfast. I was on my way there and heard something on the radio that made me think some rocker died (station said we will be right back with breaking news). I just turned the channel.
When I arrived to pick up my friend (she was at her workplace) she said "Come on let's go to the bar, they have a TV". I was still clueless. I walked in there and saw everything that was going on. I was sitting on the edge of the pool table watching TV and this guy said "Ain't gotta worry about anything hitting here, what would they hit?". It was minutes later, Flight 93 went down. I looked at him and said "Getting pretty <bleeping> close to home now, isn't it?" He walked away. (Flight 93's crash site is less than 50 miles from me) I was able to get in touch with my husband and they were stopped to pick up more guys and they weren't sure if they would head home or go on. They ended up sending them on to VA and they were locked down. The rest of the day was spent glued to the TV for me. Three weeks later my husband came home and for 6 months after that, did guard duty at his unit's WV barracks on weekends. We will be visiting the crash site again once this coming weekend passes. And to add a little bit of happiness to what otherwise will be a sad thread, after Flight 93 went down, in July 2002, 9 miners were trapped for days in a mine named Quecreek, not far from the crash site. It was another time that we sat in front of the TV. Nine miners were brought out alive, this time, we had tears of joy. That area needed that. Flight 93 will be forever associated with Shanksville, PA, but the Quecreek rescue was a bright star in an otherwise dark night. I was in class in 10th grade.
Being that I went to the largest highschool inthe DC area, we had 4-5 kids that lost family members in the pentagon attack (one of which was a close friend). I also remember that there were a few that had family at the WTC that day too. Very strange day at school until they sent us home early. |

I was traveling as part of my job. I left Logan airport in Boston on September 10th. Had I left one day later, I would have been on one of the flights that went into the towers. In fact, another employee at our company was a passenger.
My trip had taken me to California. Everyone there was glued to the news broadcasts. It was a big deal. However, I'm told the east coast was near lockdown. Things like fighter jets constantly flying overhead have an impact on the mood. All in all, I feel like I had a very different experience than my friends and neighbors. |

Thanks ladies and gents. Yes it is a sad thread but it is even more important we don't forget. I feel as a country too many of us already have. A positive of the attack was how, for a few months anyway, how united this country was. That was beautiful! I believe that unity is needed to get this country of the mess it is in now.

My wife called me from work about the first attack. Quickly switched on the tube to catch the second plane hit the towers. The I heard about another on the way in Pennsylvania. Called her back and said she ought to get out asap. Where she worked was a prime target and had been attacked before.
When I learned who the attackers were, I was not at all surprised, having read a rather large volume about the History of the Arab People. They are barbaric, yreat women as little more than slaves, infidels as the lowest caste, issue death threats against those who convert or attempt to convert. They don't assimilate but integrate. I have personal experience from back in the '50s when my fighter squadron flew from Germany to Wheelus Air Base adjacent to Tripoli, for rocketry training.. I had a chance to visit the city. My friend and I toured the Old City, an area not recommended for non-muslim tourists such as us. Just as we entered the main marketplace, the rocks started coming. These people always seem to have plenty of rocks for any occasion. We exited the Old City as quickly as we could; maybe that should be escaped without injury. And these were the people we liberated from the Germans and Italians. Our effort evidently was unappreciated it seems then as well as now.
