little do you know, there are quite a few around with over 500hundred thousand miles on the boxer. My dad has a 06 Outback with 294k miles, my friend has a 96SVX with 299k miles, and there are quite a few BRATS and GL hatches running around with over 400k on them. On the original engines none the less, original pistons, rings and crank, and showing NO cylinder wear when doing the occasional headgasket replacement.

Leaking, yes, the inherent horizontal design produces more leaks, but reliable as any can be. More reliable than ALOT of engines ever produced, don't get me going on what MOST experimental airplanes run for motors.....yes the EA81 or EG33 or EJ22 is a good start for ALOT of aircraft cause they are near bullet proof..and perfectly balanced and high power to weight ratio.

In fact, I just drove home another junk Subaru tonight a 99 OBS (outback sport) with 150k on it, with a noise in the 5spd trans. paid 650 for it. pretty sure its the rear tailshaft bearing, can be fixed while in the car....nice little winter beater. May not even fix it just drive it til something blows. Then sell the engine cause it is the good ej22 in it.

i cannot keep my signature up to date.

Does that make Porsche junk too?

See this is what really gets me. Subaru has yet to address the head gasket issue and I'm beginning to wonder if Toyota solved the problem for them. Nonetheless I'd rather gamble on a Mazda than another Subaru. I guess we'll have to see if the new FB and FA motors leak once they get some miles on them. What worries more is that Subaru once had a DOHC Boxer in their non WRX Impeza which was an absolute disaster with reliability. Mine started eating oil at 20k miles. I switched to 40w oil and it slowed it but affected my MPG never again a Subaru!

My mom had a 1996 FORD explorer with 300,000 miles on it before the odometer started to quit working. She then drove it 120 miles every weekday and 400+ miles every other weekend for another 7.5 months. Any car can last if you do routine maintenance and take care of it.
