Default Sub Zero CR-Z

Most of the "cold" or "snow" threads seem to be from places with a mild winter.

Alaska has a real winter. At the end of October we get our first snowfall, from then the ground will be perpetually covered in snow until mid march. In Anchorage we get cold snaps down to about -15F. Occasionally it will warm up into the 30s and some snow will melt, but any melt is soon replaced as warm weather usually means snowfall. Since the snow doesn't go away the city takes it off the streets and puts it into dump trucks, which in turn dump it at designated snow dumps.

I took receipt of my CR-Z earlier this month, so my entire driving experience with it has been on ice/snow. It has been my daily driver. I have driven it through snow deeper than the bottom of the door, and on roads that were solid sheets of ice with some gravel sprinkled on top. I have been very surprised at how well the car has handled with just the stock tires. This fwd car is handling the winter driving conditions nearly as well as my old 4x4 did!

The car has started up for me no problem every time. Most of my starts are with the starter motor as the car doesn't IMA start when it's cold, nor does it auto stop until its well warmed up. On sub zero days I plug in the block heater to be nice to it, but I can't tell that it makes a difference in how the car starts.

I'm operating entirely in Econ mode to try and get some reasonable fuel economy as well as purposefully slowing the car down on winter roads. I've only filled it twice so far, but it looks like my avg in the winter will probably be ~28mpg.

Car is a 2012 base model 6MT

Here's some pics I snapped earlier when we had some sunlight.

Notice the height of the snow bank compared to the car, on the other side of that snowbank is one of Anchorage's major 4 lane roads.

Instrument panel showing the temperature. It was -13F this morning, by lunch it warmed up a bit.

Welcome, and glad to hear you're getting good traction in the snow. Some have complained that it's not that great in snow, but that may depend on various factors such as driving style, tires, tire pressure, etc. What tires do you have on it?

Welcome!
We'll look to you as the expert for all matters relating to winter driving the CRZ!
I certainly cannot compete for that title this year. We've had the warmest, least snowy winter in memory. Partly due to my idling my SUV 24 x 7
Drive safey, and we look forward to hearing more from you.

I wouldn't drive a white car up here. There is entirely too much road grime for a white car, they all end up looking filthy all the time.
