Default hello

Greetings from Tennessee! I am the proud owner of a 2011 CR-Z EX manual (of course) which I 've had for only 10 days and am having a blast driving it so far. Today I reached 599 miles and mostly drive it in Normal mode (90 percent of the time use it for a highway commute to work). I've had zero issues with this car except for a peculiar high-pitched buzzing sound from the dash that occurs as soon as I exceed 80mph (reminds me of a kitchen timer going off) and disappears when I slow down below 80mph. The noise is quite loud (I had the sound system blasting medium intensity first time this occurred ) and my first instinct was to let off the accelerator pedal.....then as soon as the car drops below the 80mph threshold, the buzzing noise stops. On the dashboard display, there are no warning indicators lighting up... the only thing that I notice on the dashboard consistently is that the CHRG (battery charge in progress) indicator will have around 5-6 "bars" lit up that accompany the loud buzzing noise. The "IMA Battery Charge Level Indicator" is usually 2/3rds lit (from left to right) when the buzzing alarm goes off. As soon as the car slows below 80 mph, the CHRG indicator will then drop to 0 to 1 bars lit and the buzzing sound goes away. I contacted the salesperson at the dealership about this and he didn't have a clue as to what this noise was about but he told me that the best person who might know the answer at the dealership would be the foreman of the service dept.....so I have scheduled an appointment to meet with him in a couple of days so that he can take the car out for a drive to diagnose this problem
I did a quick search on this forum and couldn't find any threads concerning this. Any insight into this issue(?) would be greatly appreciated because I am otherwise really digging my CR-Z!

Try a search for 'wind noise'. Seems what you describe has been experienced by others.

Welcome!

Hey, Welcome!
Congratulations on the new CR-Z, too.

I don't know if we ever solved the noise you are referring to, but you may want to investigate these threads on noise:
squeal at higher speeds
Vibration noise
Funny Noise... Any suggestions?
alarmed at 100 mph?

Good luck!

Hi guys, thank you for the warm welcome and for the informative links. I'm actually extremely relieved because I have been worried that my vehicle might have a serious mechanical defect since the day I purchased it (on 10/15).
I'm also stoked that I can now drive my cr-z more "enthusiastically" as the odomotor now reads 622
I figure the noise is a great way to reduce my likelihood of getting speeding tickets anyhow!

Welcome and congrats on your CRZ.

Sounds like others have pointed you in the right direction on some of the noises CRZ owners have been experiencing - I've been lucky so far and haven't had any strange vibrations or noises although I do have a loose rubber door seal on the driver's door I plan to get looked at when I take mine for its first service. I'm surprised I don't hear wind noise from that but mine is a daily driver so maybe it never gets a chance to go fast enough to make noise.
