I am new to any type of forum on the web, so please excuse me if I get long winded. Firstly I have to clarify that I am not an owner of a CRZ to be honest I have never owned a Honda, this said I am lucky enough to have worked in the motor industry and have had the opportunity to drive most of our locally (South African) available Honda products dating back to the later ‘80s. I left the motor industry in the late ‘90s but my luck continued when a close family member got a position working for Honda (South Africa). This then brings me to my association with the Honda CRZ. Around Mid 2010 they showed me the press launch photos of the newly released CRZ, just by the looks it seemed an impressive little vehicle but my impression changed slightly when they told me that it was to be launched as a hybrid and that it would be assisted by the little 1.5l motor similar to the one in the little Honda Jazz/Kit. Driving the little Jazz/Kit was to say interesting because I managed on numerous occasions too surprise other road users in the twists and bends around our countryside with its impressive handling abilities, so I was looking forward to having the ability to drive this new CRZ because of its sporty ness. I must say “Sporty” with tong in cheek, when I first saw its Hybrid badge on the back boot panel I kept thinking “tree hugger, hairdresser” sorry if this offends people but I see myself as hardcore out doors survivalist when it comes to cars, I like my Gas guzzling V8s, 4x4’s and German precision fuel consumers. It wasn’t until just recently when the dealership needed a demo CRZ available for their test drive purposes did I get the opportunity to drive the CRZ. I can now officially announce that this is the missing link for a small runabout, the link between fun and the Carbon emissions clamp down. It is also a leader for the future of track car days around the world, I can shout this out because my first opportunity was to drive it on a Honda track day (all day) and was I impressed, to be honest I believe so were many of the bystanders as well as other competitors that day. Even with its stock factory chassis, some of the more modified older street racer cars (I was pitted against) had a hard time when it came to the corners. Closing gaps of 100m under braking and handling around fast sweeping turns was Childs play (I must clarify that on these track days passing on corners was band to keep it safe for the novices competing) so I was unable to prove the vehicles full potential, however as soon as the straight lines came the other drivers would have to make hay while the sun shone because they knew the corners were coming. Its going to be awhile before a CRZ will come in at a price that I can afford to put one together as a full track day car but when it does there is going revolution in track days in South Africa. PS: If anyone knows a “Greeny Beany” that drag races an electric vehicle and they are willing to part with their secrets, there may just be untapped potential in the little electric motor for power needed on the straights or when passing other competitors? |
