Exclamation Fusion Hybrid goes 1,445 miles on single tank

wow... after reading in another thread about a Ford Fusion Hybrid averaged 72mpg on a single trip... i googled this to find the story on it... the one i found was even better... read for yourself below or click on the link... Ford Fusion hybrid hypermiles, goes 1,445 miles on a single tank

Quote:
The Ford Fusion we talked about earlier today, the one that went on the hypermiling publicity stunt, has come to the end of the road its fuel supply. The final number: 1,445 miles on a tank of gas, giving wannabe Lisa Nowaks a new vehicle of choice. On the 1,445.7-mile trip, the Ford Fusion hybrid was pushed to an average of 81.5 mpg. Even considering that hypermiling techniques were employed to reach these numbers, we're quite impressed. I mean, this is a production midsize sedan that got over 80 mpg driving on regular streets, including many in Washington, D.C. The entire event took 69 hours and raised $8,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. You can read the details of how the driving teams managed the 80 mpg after the jump - no, they didn't find a thousand-mile downhill road.

this intrigued me and i found that people actually make a sport out of "Hypermiling"... friendly competition of course... i also found another article about a Prius getting 1,347 miles on one tank with an average of 109mpg :-o

from what i read though most of the "hypermilers" like to drive '00-'06 Insights

I believe there was a group that pulled 1500 miles out of the original Insight-I. Was a planned trip around some long flat roads in the plains states.

best I ever got was 970 miles in my 2000 Insight....I could/should have pushed thru 1000...avg mpg was 72.1 for the 30K miles I owned it...****ty car tho...no cruise...no cold a/c while stopped (unless the engine ran)

current 08 Prius = 58mpg; much better/comfy car but not sporty at all.

I spent about 400 miles in a 2000 Insight 5-mt pver the last 7 days and averaged 50.2 MPG during that time (New battery pack just installed, and 42,200 on the odo). I guess that's pretty good considering the temperature never went above freezing and we got 20 inches of snow over those days... I am still amazed to hear when people get 60-100 mpg averages. Seems almost impossible, but some are so good at it that they make it happen.

I turned the 2000 in for a 2010 Insight EX and have driven it about 70 miles so far, with an average of 49.0 MPG. When the weather gets a little warmer I may put some extra air in the tires and see if that makes a difference. In any case, these are the first 2 hybrids I have driven and I am VERY impressed. I would highly recommend either of them to anyone, and after driving the 5-mt Insight I cannot wait for the 6-MT CR-Z.
