Optimism in the air as Detroit auto show opens

DETROIT—If there's one thing we can be sure of with this year's Detroit auto show, it's that everyone—manufacturers, visitors and even the miserable, critical media—will be a lot more optimistic for the industry than a year ago.

After a year of bankruptcies, rescaled productions and rethought business plans, in which some brands came out strong and others didn't even make it out of the gate, the auto industry is rebuilding itself with a significantly improved lineup of vehicles for North America.

At least 30 new vehicles are scheduled to be revealed for the first time this week at the North American International Auto Show, which opens this morning to the media and on Friday to the public. There may be more—we won't know just how many until the dust settles on the media previews tomorrow afternoon.

Some are completely new, like the Chevy Orlando, a seven-passenger CUV based on the Chevrolet Aveo, or the Honda CR-Z, a two-passenger hybrid sports car. Both will be sold this year, but have been seen so far only in photos.
