Mugen Honda CR-Z Under Consideration
![]() LONDON — Engine tuner Mugen has announced plans to develop high-performance versions of Honda's hybrid models. Mugen Euro Vice President Hiro Toyoda says the company is "looking at the CR-Z," the new CRX-inspired hybrid sport coupe that is slated to appear in the U.S. at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in January. Toyoda, who heads up Mugen's U.K.-based European operation, reckons that the hybrid's electric motor can be upgraded to provide more low-end torque, allowing the gasoline engine to be tuned for maximum top-end power without spoiling the car's drivability. Its regenerative braking system will also be harnessed to deliver more recuperative boost to a battery pack facing greater demands from a more potent electric motor. There's no word yet on when a hot Mugen CR-Z might appear or regarding what the extra power will do to its emissions, but hot hybrids are on the way. Inside Line says: Tuned hybrids will add glamour to the breed — and provide intriguing new ways to make a car go faster and cleaner. — Richard Bremner, Correspondent Full article here.
