Mugen Honda CR-Z Under Consideration

LONDON — Engine tuner Mugen has announced plans to develop high-performance versions of Honda's hybrid models.

Mugen Euro Vice President Hiro Toyoda says the company is "looking at the CR-Z," the new CRX-inspired hybrid sport coupe that is slated to appear in the U.S. at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in January. Toyoda, who heads up Mugen's U.K.-based European operation, reckons that the hybrid's electric motor can be upgraded to provide more low-end torque, allowing the gasoline engine to be tuned for maximum top-end power without spoiling the car's drivability.

Its regenerative braking system will also be harnessed to deliver more recuperative boost to a battery pack facing greater demands from a more potent electric motor.

There's no word yet on when a hot Mugen CR-Z might appear or regarding what the extra power will do to its emissions, but hot hybrids are on the way.

Inside Line says: Tuned hybrids will add glamour to the breed — and provide intriguing new ways to make a car go faster and cleaner. — Richard Bremner, Correspondent

I'm hoping it will be upwards of 160. Maybe as much as 170. With this 'possible' Mugen deal we should see a lot more other companies take interest in the CRZ as well. Honda will have lots of pressure on them to make sure they do everything possible so this car will succeed and hit markets asap.

Great news!! Now comes the question, will the Mugen CRZ debut at the same time as the American CRZ. I would hate to purchase a CRZ then have a modified Mugen CRZ come out a few months later
