The CR-Z Super GT racer campaigned by
Honda and Mugen made its competitive debut at Sportsland Sugo for the fourth round of this year's Super GT series.
The car competes in the GT300 class and is powered by a twin-turbo, 2.8 liter V6 teamed with a hybrid system developed exclusively for this racecar. It qualified ninth out of 25 cars and moved up through the pack to be in second for a while.
The CR-Z only managed to finish 16th due to a delay in the pits and the engine being slow to restart.
In the fifth round of the series, the hybrid racer qualified on pole, but mechanical issues forced it to reitre after 150 laps. This still provided an 11th place finish in class and 22nd overall. Not bad for the car's second race ever.
Hybrid racers have shown their superiority to traditonal, gasoline-powered cars, in events like 24 hours of LeMans. Once Honda works the kinks out of this racer, expect to see great things.
