I am one of the few manual owners who use Eco mode (other then heavy traffic on a bride). Well usually on The beltway in town I go 63mph in a 65. Which achieves a 38ish mpg with a/c on and 45ish with a/c on. Well i95s is 70mph. What speed (perf over 70) will achieve The most mpg in eco with a/c off?

I have found i get best mileage in my 6mt in eco mode under 50-55 mph. Anything over 55-60 mph i use normal mode otherwise the car is always trying to charge the battery because the assist is always trying to assist. In normal my battery is not always drained, i can keep constant speed easier and i get better mileage. I usually get between 37-40 mpg doing between 75 and 80 with the ac off in normal mode.

Food for thought... drag force formula:
Fd=½pv²CdAImportant thing here is that v² term: it makes the force of drag exponential. That's why most truckers will only go 70, even in a 75 or 80 zone. Mythbusters and did a couple great pieces on this rolled into the AC vs windows open story, and semi-trailer tailgating story, and Top Gear touched on it as well... I've got 46mpg doing 70 tucked behind a semi for ~90 miles or so but do this at your own risk... truckers hate it and you can get ticked for tailgating. |

5MPG difference on a 300 mile trip nets you $3.50 in savings. Drive safe and enjoy yourself.
That said, I do manage over 40MPG going 70mph+ around Atlanta by paying attention to traffic, coasting a lot and being careful with the accelerator. Pretty much never use cruise control, either - constant speed is not very MPG-friendly. |
