Default US 101, Camarillo Grade, Test Run

Anybody with a CVT in T.O., Camarillo, or Oxnard who cares to perform a test run up the Camarillo grade? In 'econ mode' with cruise control set to '65 mph' and the IMA at about 7 bars at the base of the hill, what RPMs does the engine select when heading up the hill?

I've done that run many times, but with the 6MT.

I used to live in Topanga Canyon and worked at Pt Mugu, so I know that road, and I'm guessing he wants to know if it can hold its speed and maker up the hill without problems.

I'm looking to learn what RPMs the engine controller chooses when in 'econ mode'. I'm figuring the engine will chose the RPMs for highest efficiency while still pulling the long, steep hill. I have a 6MT (so the engine doesn't optimize the RPMs, I chose the RPMs).

I do that run every two week days, from SB to Pasadena. I hit the hill at 50 miles on the trip meter and ~41 mpg. At the top of the hill I'm at ~38.5 - lost 2.5 mpg. I spend the remaining 50 miles getting back up to ~41 mpg.

Without a CVT test run, I'm going to experiment with gear/mode combinations to see what gets the best MPG. I'm going to reset the B trip meter at Camarillo Springs and then read the MPG at the crest. 6th gear, 65 mph will not hold the hill so I'll try 4th and 5th gears in econ, normal and sport over then next couple of weeks.

I haven't personally set cruise to climb huge hills or mountain roads but just hitting a medium to small hills. I notice having cruise set on 6 gear(6spd tranny) it does not auto down shift to compensate for torque or power and it shot up accelerator and IMA assist in cruise mode. I suppose that's how manuals are manual even in cruise mode. Maybe CVTs will auto downshift for the proper power band to maintain a constant speed in cruise control mode with relatively low loss to fuel economy compare to manual.

Yes, for a CVT is totally drive by wire in Cruise.. In ECON, you do lose 1-4 MPH going up a hill and can gain 1-4 going down so if in traffic, can be annoying. It is trying to get the best MPG. In Normal - 1-2 either way. In Sport, does a good job of keeping it at set speed.

Exactly. And my question is 'what RPMs does the engine choose?'

Argh. I misunderstood your question. Thought you wanted gears. Anyway, I tried it CVT up the Camarillo grade in cruise control ECON and it kept fluctuating between 5 and 6 gear. Killed my MPG. And was slow as hell!!

Going to make that run again on Xmas, so this time I will pay attention to RPMs/battery level and get back to you.
