My 6MT can't make it in 6th either. Has to be either 5th (or 4th). I reset the B mileage indicator under the sign for the last exit before the hill. The peak is 2.2 miles later and my fuel shows 18 mpg (5th gear, cc at 65 mph, econ mode). |

Well... here's what happened.
Reset trip meter at Camarillo Springs sign, 65mph in ECON, Cruise Control, CVT. Car struggled between 3-4000RPMs on average, sometimes bounced to almost 5000. Stayed between 62-65mph on average but did drop to 58 at one point. MPG at the top of the hill was 21.2mpg. Can't remember how many bars the battery meter lost, but I'm sure it was 2 or 3. I must say, though, that we had to take her out of CC for about 3 seconds to avoid getting stuck behind a semi going 40mph. So, these results are not perfect. And, as an aside, I think that you get better MPG driving the car vs cruise control. Drove to SB for dinner one night and got 41mpg. Drove that same route in CC and got 33mpg. I know lots of other things can affect MPG, but CC does weird things. I hate CC. |

Great, thanks! Did it drop gearing to 5,000 rpm one or two times or a whole bunch of times?
So the engine controller for Econ modes concludes "I'm going to keep the RPMs as low as possible provided I can pull the hill; if not I'm going to drop down to 5000 rpm until I get back to the cruise speed". I thought one possibility was that the car would conclude "I'll get the best MPG for these conditions at X rpm (say 5,000), I'll stay at X for the entire hill" - this is not the case. In my own 6MT tests, I've newer gotten better than 18.6 mpg at the peak. But, I've been staying in one gear (either 4th or 5th) the whole way. I'll try staying in 6th while I can and then moving down to 5th or 4th as conditions demand. |
