Even though I use Econ sparingly, I do find it useful when going down hill or on a flat surface. It reduces engine breaking (CVT) and allows the car to roll more.. and I can see my MPG go up quickly. Problem here is, there are few flat roads and seems most uphill drives are long and going downhill is short. Never make up the difference.

Depends on what you mean by faster? At least in the CVT, it keeps the RPMs higher and thus ready to increase speed faster with a lighter touch of the gas = which could equate to - eh - faster. I know I get more of a lag in ECO or NORM even if I put the pedal to the medal. So, understanding that you do not get more power aka HP or anything, it does potentially make the car a little faster.

I've done 2 different tests with all 3 modes and every time I've gotten better mileage in SPORT and I'm driving the car normal, like I always do, I too will never go to ECON again, it does NOTHING in my car but remember, I've got a 6 spd too, I think that makes a difference.
Last tank was 43.9 mpg but its been very cool in the mornings all of a sudden, so I expect another drop and then there's the winter grade coming soon. I don't understand winter blend, it makes your car lose mileage, thus using more fuel, what's the point? |

My car is very consistent, 43.6 mpg last tank and this current tank I've added a bottle of Chevron fuel injector cleaner, I do this every 10k and don't expect an improvement but it doesn't hurt either. I don't think I'll hit my 45 mpg goal, I think this is the best I can get out of it and I'm happy if this is infact the case

KA, I am not sure you aren't getting 45 mpg. With out knowing what the tires are taking away from actual miles I would believe you are. There is still a chance you will hit 45 anyways. The cooler temps up to mid November my mpg always boosted a few mpg before falling. Winter gas is actually better than summer gas because toluene is a additive and there is more gas in winter gasoline. Temps are what hurt mpg in summer and winter but the spring and fall you will usually see better mpg. |

So I too have just finished my own little experiment on mpg's using the ECON and SPORT button. I take the same way to work and the weather has actually been pretty consistent too. The only thing changed was the use of Mobil 1 93 on the SPORT portion and BP 93 for the ECON run.
Here's what I came up with: -39.0 mpg using ECON -41.5 mpg using SPORT I have an 80 mile commute per day, lots of hills, over half........I just couldn't stand the ECON and NORMAL modes anymore because she was SUCH a dog on the hills!!! I started using SPORT all the time, my average MPG went form 36 to to 41/42!!! Awesome! I guess its like having a biga$$ truck with a V-6, you put a V-8 in it, its gonna get better mpg because its not working as hard (not bad for a girl huh?! )Oh BTW over 43K and still in love! ![]()

Great numbers Max, the use of 93 really helps out alot IMO, as well as others, so keep the premium going and good to see so many miles on the car, you wanna come to the Dragon and join our run this year, we've got 4 CR-Z's already, as well as our usual group of other non-CR-Z's.
My mileage was 43.2 mpg last tank with the addition of the fuel injection cleaner and I even did straight freeway trips home 2 days in a row this past week, as well as a mostly freeway trip this past Saturday to go to a customers business, so I'm pretty happy. My buddy and I are changing the oil today, going to Mobil 1 EP w/Mobil 1 syn filter and let me tell you this, I'm down to 5% life left and the oil is still golden, amazing. I'm leaving the Mobil 1 in for 15k no matter what, I'm sure its going to be fine and its going to be tested when it comes out. I know SB believes the mileage will go up with synthetic so we'll see how it goes. |

On a side note my new car got 42.2 first tank and 43.3 second and I bumped the octane to Shell 89 and driving home the i Mid display showed 46 mpg using Econ. I have been driving slower but at speeds above 70 the mpg really drops, more than when I ran premium. I plan to use 89 for the next tank and if the mpg keeps going up I will go to V power. Fuel trims are leaning to and did notice a big bump power even in Econ. KA, I am liking Shell and Econ so I recommend using Econ at cruise. I notice it lowers engine loads but if your passing you want to switch to sport. Even with the Auto it doesn't have the power to pass in Econ. |
