For the average driver (probably someone not active on the forum), I don't think so. If you use ECON as it was intended, it will provide better MPG as opposed to if you use SPORT as it was intended, e.g., full throttle have some fun, then the marketing is correct. But, if you use and experiment with SPORT, you can get the same mileage.

I agree with this for the most part but I really tried to use ECON the right way, or atleast what I thought was "right" and if I had to guess, I shifted in ECON at about 2250-2500 rpm, in SPORT I shift at 2500 just about every time. IMO the use of ECON w/ the 6MT will not net a gain based on what I've seen.

Now FFear.....82 mpg on one tank?

That was in a 2004 Honda Insight. It has a 995cc motor and weights 1800 lbs. The CRZ is a lot more fun at 40 mpg.

I didn't realize the original Insight had a 1.0 liter engine, that helps for sure, along with smallish tires/wheels and for sure, that curb weight that's 100 lbs less than a Lotus Elise doesn't hurt either. Does it still feel like a solid car to this day? Does it get out on the freeway ok or do you really have to "plan ahead" when trying to make a move?

The Insight feels solid. I did run 50 psi in the tires and installed 38mm spacer under the rear wheels to increase the rear track. The rear track was 5" narrower than the front. This made it squirrelly in snow or on gravel. With 72 hp including IMA, you had to plan ahead but if you shifted at 5500 or 6000 rpm it would get up to speed ok. If they still made that car, I would have bought another one because of 20 more mpg.

I see those original Insights from time to time, I wonder what made Honda to stop making them?

My car is very consistent, I netted 41.9 mpg today and its once again getting dangerously hott too, will it ever end.....what a year My OBC showed 42.8 mpg's, so it wasn't as close as it has been but that's ok, nothings perfect, even car computers

I wonder if I'll be able to break into the 45 mpg's in the fall

KA,
Just refilled today. Mine has become consistent--last 2 tankfuls: 46.1 mpg last week & 46.3 mpg today. I'm satisfied with that. Running 87-Oct NO Ethanol, Sport Mode, Air Condish always ON. This includes having added the Remus Center-Exit Exhaust same time I began using Zero Ethanol, if that matters. Temps between appx 72 and 97, depending on which days & what times driven.

UPDATE:
Just filled up [again] today (7/19/2012); 450.0 miles divided by 9.1 gals = 49.5 mpg <my best yet....will I hit 50 mpg eventually?> One can hope!

The fact that it cost more to make them than they sold for? They are an aluminum car that was hand built. They were Honda's attempt to break into the hybrid segment. They demonstrated what Honda could do.

Typically my OBC reads high below 38 and low above 40mpg. I would expect you to get some of your best mileage when it hot out. A tailwind wouldn't hurt.

Your mileage is great, so you've gone away from premium for good now? I'd say if its ethanol free, try premium like that and see what happens. Not saying its going to go up 25% or anything but its worth a shot. Our ethanol free stations around here are always out in the sticks, too far away.

Its supposed to be 100 here once again, this upper 90's/100 degree weather is really kicking my ass, glad I don't work outside, tip of the cap to those guys who do, that must be really hard!! So far I've been at 40.8 mpg in the insane heat, so I'm pretty happy with that, come on cooler temps, I think 45's are in the forecast.....45 mpg's that is

NO Gas Stations in our area that sell Premium NO Ethanol. Used to be until about 2 months ago--now all they have is ONE 87-Octane NO Ethanol Gas Pump.
There are only TWO Gas Stations in our area with ONE No Ethanol pump each & the other one's is .13 cents higher per gallon. Soooo, very limited here.

UPDATE
Filled up again (7/25/12)--I keep using 87-Oct Ethanol FREE gas, AND mileage INcreased today: @ 53.2 MPG. MOST pleased & will continue in Sport Mode with A/C ON. I'm seriously happy to get ABOVE 50 mpg the way I drive Christine. May never see it again--but I'm celebratin' today! [500.1 miles divided by 9.4 gals]
