Default Gas Milage Saved Me

So, I was in a situation where I'm now getting way too used to not "having to think about gas" and it almost bit me in the rear. I am coming off a NY trip from last week on a single tank of gas and then had to zip in to the office to wrap up my expense report this week. All the while having a comfortable amount of gas in the car....or so I thought. At one point I was well away from any gas stations (well, any that I'd trust anyway) and looked down to see I had 10 miles left until empty. Now I'm sure that there is a buffer (at least that is what I told myself to prevent heart failure), but I was easily 15 miles away from any gas stations so mild panic was starting to creep in to my brain. All I kept thinking about was sitting on the side of the road waiting for AAA to arrive and then having to explain, "Yes, this is a Hybrid and Yes I ran out of gas"....not a good look. Anyway, I made it to the station with 2 miles to spare.

So, that leads to my question, what is the lowest you've ever gotten your tank down to and has anyone ever run out of gas in the CR-Z?

I've ran down to "0 miles remain" per the car's estimate, and went an additional 12 miles. Like you, I had stopped paying attention, and I was out in the middle of nowhere. I turned off the AC, rolled the windows up, hit ECON and set the cruise control - I was panicked! When I filled up, it took 9.8 gallons to full - so I had like .2 gallons left - maybe could have gotten a *few* more miles out of her before she keeled over lol.

our tanks 40L (+/-10.56gallons)

I got down to 7 miles and considered waiting until the morning to fill up. My house is 3 miles away from the gas station, so theoretically I'd have 1 mile left when I filled up. My wife made me stop and fill up.... Something to be said about the "better half"

I ran 20 miles over the 0 point today. Filled up and it took 10.1 gal. I am estimating I could have gone another 15 today before running out. I have filled up several times at 0 and it took 9.6 to fill. No worries.

I never let my old Civic get below 1/4 tank. I was pretty OCD about it.

Now, I let the CR-Z get down to 50-40 miles left in range before I fill up. Don't know what caused the mental shift... maybe because, even though I am going to the gas station less than I did with my Civic, putting it off an extra three or four days makes me feel like the car is using less gas. HA.

You guys are crazy to let it get so low, though. Guess it's a girl thing. Not a big risk taker.

When at zero miles the car takes around 9.8 gallons which leaves 0.8 gallons and 24 miles (30 mpg) to 32 miles (40 mpg). I always wait until '0 miles remain' when on my weekly commute. My last four commute fill-ups: 9.83, 9.75, 9.78, 9.85. My weekly commute is 420 miles so I need to get that mileage on one tank to avoid filling up during the commute.

One time I was on a road trip, used the nav to find a gas station and it was closed down!
Nearest station was 10 miles out and range showed 0 remaining.

I made it, but it was scary!

It wasn't intentional by any means. I usually get gas well before a 1/4 tank. Mostly because I was always told that sludge lived at the bottom of gas tanks and allowing your tank to get too low and "suck up" that crap was bad for injectors. Not sure how true that is, but has been habit forming information.

I think I ran something like 30 miles past zero empty and didn't even put in over 10 gallons of gas.
