Experiment results...

Well, I did an interesting little experiment this evening.

Driving home from Stansted airport (UK) is 53 miles of not-too-hilly dual carriageway ('freeway' for our American friends). Today I did some things I don't normally do...
  • Reset the 'trip B'
  • Switched off the air con
  • Selected econ mode
  • Tucked in to the inside lane and cruised along with the lorries (European speed limiters are set at 56 mph for these big trucks, so they go at a fairly fixed speed)
  • Used the cruise control, nudging the set speed up and down as necessary to maintain safe distance from vehicle in front

Result:
62.1 mpg (UK gallons) = 51.7 mpg (US gallons)
Allowing for a small error in the MID display that's.... still pretty good I'd say. In fact, very nearly as good as my i2 Insight and certainly my best yet in four months of CR-Z ownership.

I like my CR-Z!

Interesting experiment. I never reset B I always reset A and have car do so for me at each fill up. B would have been all miles but something happened when the dealership replaced the battery under warranty. With a CR-Z finding a reason to drive is not a problem!

If I want to check mileage on the Speed Bump I can always hand calculate from the log book in the glove compartment.

Experiment part 2: CR-Z versus i2 Insight...

I drove the same 'Stansted airport to home' journey again this evening, only this time in my 2012 i2 Honda Insight instead of the CR-Z. So I took the opportunity to do the same experiment as I did two weeks ago in the CR-Z, i.e.:
  • Reset the 'trip B'
  • Air con off, econ mode on
  • Tucked in to the inside lane and cruised along with the lorries
  • Used the cruise control, nudging the set speed up and down as necessary to maintain safe distance from vehicle in front

Results:

2012 Honda Insight

Actual: 76.5 mpg (UK gallons)
Official combined consumption (PCFCO, UK Passenger Car Fuel Consumption Order): 61.4 mpg (UK gallons)
So this is 24.6% better than the official consumption

Comparing with my same journey, same test, two weeks ago in the CR-Z:
2011 Honda CR-Z
Actual: 62.1 mpg (UK gallons)
Official combined consumption (PCFCO): 56.5 mpg (UK gallons)
So this is 10% better than the official consumption

I like my Hondas!
