The most significant difference is throttle mapping. (There's other differences, but this is the big one.)

Think about how much fuel is fed into the engine by the injectors. For the sake of discussion, let's call that amount of fuel "X". When you step on the gas pedal and press it 1/4 of the way to the floor, the injectors spit out X amount of fuel. When you push the pedal 1/2 of the way, the injectors spit out twice as much, or 2X.

Well, in Econ mode, stepping on the pedal 1/4 of the way only gets you 1/2 of X. In Normal mode, it gets you a full X. In sport mode, it gets you more than X.

It's all a matter of how responsive the throttle is to your inputs. In Econ, it responds lazily. In Sport, it gets all frisky. Of course, my number are completely bogus. Here's a chart that shows the actual throttle mapping.

Basically, Econ mode trains the driver to use smaller adjustments with the throttle. It doesn't do much mechanically, it just teaches you to drive more efficiently.

^ good reply "V".. I was just going to give a "provides different throttle response" one liner. Thanks for taking the time..

Cruise control is treated differently. If you set CC at X mph in Sport or Normal, the car will hold X while driving, including up hills. But, in Econ mode, the car will fluctuate between X - 3 (up hills) and X + 3 (down hills) mph.

Also, I believe the IMA is treated differently as regards when it is drained and when it is charged. For example, at 3,000 rpm in Sport mode the IMA gets charged but at 3,000 rpm in Econ mode, the IMA isn't charged (unless the IMA is down to 3 bars). I think.

Well in ECON the shift light comes on alot sooner and the throttle response is VERY slow and VERY noticeable compared to NORMAL. I haven't had to use the a/c too much as I got the car in Sept, so not too sure about the a/c useage. So as far as that goes, there is a HUGE difference there IMO and when you hit the sport button, the 3rd car inside comes out!!!

I'll report back my findings in SPORT mode on my next tank, damn using the SPORT button is addictive for sure and so far, the OBC is a little over 40 mpg, not bad so far!

Default mpg crz

I have driven my crz 30,000 miles now. in NY back and forth to work and on long trips and I've averaged 42 mpg in total. Never reset the trip meter for the trip "B"

It seems like the more i drive it the better the gas mileage is. I got 47 mpg last weekend driving from New paltz ny to annapolis maryland and back.....

Well, when you say it like that...

For the full monty on three mode driving I recommend this link. Just scroll down about half way for the 3-mode section.

Over the 7,000 miles I've had this car so far, my average is 46.1 MPG. I've had a tank as high as 55 (for an entire tank!) and as low as 42 (driving in the 32s for a while after my K&N install).

This is read from the MFD on my CVT so there is a possibility I have actually be doing better. I've read that the MFD might calculate a bit conservatively.

I purchased my car used, (EX w/6 speed manual transmission) the first week of December 2011, and have put 5,180 miles on the car in that time, averaging 41.4mpg (US) on regular (87 octane) fuel, with the exception of 1 tank of 89 octane because 87 octane wasn't available. Most of the miles have been in-town driving. I have found that I get better mileage in town than on the highway, and was surprised to find that I get as good or better mileage in 'normal' mode rather than 'econ' mode. I no longer use 'econ' mode since I don't like the reduced performance. Best mileage to date was 43.2 on the 89 octane fuel. Worst mileage was 38.7 which was largely highway mileage and using a/c. I calculate the mileage and don't rely on the display in the car, which I find usually exaggerates my mileage by at least 1/2 mpg or more.
