I've noticed for sure that Econ definitely is the most fuel efficient. It may seem like, in the short term, that using cruise control in other modes you get better mileage, but I've extensively tested this theory and it's busted.

So far, the best pocket of fuel efficiency I've found is cruise control @ 59-61 MPH n Econ Mode.

Filled up the tank and sure enough - 9.1 US gallons were put into it.. Raises the question of with over a gallon left why would the range only show 20 miles?? Average MPG on the tank was 37mpg in this instance..

I'm having a similar issue.

At the moment, with this tank, I'm having an average "mpg" of 5.2 l/ 100 km (~ 45 US mpg). Theoretically for a tank of 40l (~ 10.6 g), I should have a range of 769 km.

I have driven 554 km, and it shows an estimated range of 106 km (should be 215 km, as per above calculations, leaving a difference of 109 km!!!!).

I have been logging my "mpg" on fuelly.com, and previous entries have matched with the "mpg" calculated by the CR-Z. So, I don't think that this "mpg" has been wrongly calculated by the CR-Z.

Looks like CR-Z is being cautious and showing a much lower range.

I won't take the risk and I'll be refuelling tomorrow. I'm quite sure though that I won't be able to refill more than 30 l!

I think each bar is about 1/2 gallon and that 0 bars is 9.6 gallons. Therefore, even when showing 0 bars, you still have 1 whole gallon left.

I routinely run beyond 0 bars. My two day commute is 420 miles so I try to make one tankful last for 420 miles which means I'm pushing empty always and filling up near 10 gallons. (See my fuelly.com)

I learned, nearly the hard way, to trust the bars. One time my bars ran out but, since my MPG meter said 43 mpg, I figured I had at least 430 miles in the tank. I ignored the bars and kept driving. When I filled up, the car took 10.63 gallons (!!) and I 'only' got 40.8 mpg. So, when I hit zero bars I'm getting gas within 30 miles at the worst.

For those of you who take it down to zero bars, I salute your bravery. I roll into a gas station right when I hear a DING! and see "LOW FUEL" on the MID. I get about 380 miles of range before that happens, and my fill-ups average 8.5 gallons.

I think the range shows you what you have left to having 1 gallon left as a safety thing. Everytime I've filled up with the range around 10 miles left I was only able to put about 9.5 gallons in.

I filled in the tank today, and surely I was not able to pour more than 32 l. So, although the "mpg" is being correctly calculated, the estimated range is far too prudent.

When I went to fill in, I had already the low petrol warning with a range of 57 km only.

In other words, the CRZ is "hiding" from me approx. 5.5 l (~ 1.45 g).

I guess ShazzNADES is right, the CRZ must keep around 1 g as a safety measure. Anyway, better safe than sorry!

Yeah the way it calculates range confuses me. From what I know its calculated from your recent mpg averages but it doesn't make sense to me because several times I've filled up and I had over 550 miles shown. I don't think I could get that much even if I used the full 10.6 gallons or whatever it is.

Yep, you are right. I just checked the estimated range with this new tank, and it's showing 860 km + 30 km that I have driven (~ 553 mi). In other words, I would need an "mpg" of 4.5 l / 100 km (~ 52 mpg) to get this mileage, when my best mpg is 5.2 l / 100 km (~ 45 mpg). My current mpg with this new tank is 4.8 l / 100 km (~ 49 mpg).

Cutting it short, the range is very optimistic in the beginning and very pessimistic at the end! LOL Possibly realistic halfway through...

Yea - it is kind of like the MPG calculations - your not going to get any type of accurate or consistant reading until you burn a half tank or so. And yes, it has been my experience that it does leave you that extra gallon or so.
