If your doing a journey of under 250 miles/half a tank'ish. Just fill up half a tank of fuel. The reduced weight will give you more MPG!

Gasoline weighs 6 pounds per US gallon. Filling up with only a half tank (5 gallons) saves you only 30 pounds of weight. I do not think this much weight savings would result in an even measurable amount of fuel savings.

Now 30 pounds of rotational mass (ie heavier wheels and tires) would affect fuel economy.
