Default better mpg in sport mode

just posting this thread to see who else gets better mpg when using sport mode? when i first got the car i used to drive in normal all the time (sometimes econ) and always found myself being on the gas pedal longer than i need to. then i tried neutral coasting and that was able to net me a few more mpg. i never put it in sport in fear my mpg would drop drastically coz i'll just be romping on it. however, recently, i've been putting it in sport and i find it easier to keep off the gas more. my commute to and from work used to get me around 42mpg. now, using sport mode i net anywhere between 45-50mpg roundtrip. its just the city driving when im not going to work that kills my average. i used to average between 32-35mpg and now am averaging 38-39mpg on my last two or three fillups. hoping to push 40mpg+ one day, but all these stoplights in my town gets the best of me.

in essence, i know the different modes only adjust the throttle input to "help" the average driver get more mpg, but after learning how to drive this thing, what i'm trying to ask is who else keeps it in sport because they get better gas mileage?

I do. This seems to be true only for 6 mt though. Several threads about this already including: Better mpg in Sport than in Eco...

You've been here long enough to not get the UTFS flames

But yeah, the car seems to like getting up to speed fast, and then cruising there. Sport works best for that, for me, and I get the same MPG or better in sport.

just when i was ready to put the flamesuit on haha

but anyway, even though the car seems to assist more in sport, i'm able to maintain my battery level longer too. just like i read in the other thread, the CVT not only changes the throttle mapping and amount of IMA assist like the manual, but the CVT also changes the gear ratios on each driving mode.. i had no idea

miles driven / gallons / cost / mpg
380.1 __ 9.479 __ $4.12 __ 40.1 mpg __ (All in Econ mode)
376.0 __ 9.519 __ $4.27 __ 39.5 mpg __ (All in Sport mode)
333.5 __ 8.153 __ $4.30 __ 40.9 mpg __ (All in Normal mode)

I guess with the 6MT you can run just about any mode and do ok.
But I want to add that we recently realized that tire pressure was pretty low, and have no idea how long it's been like that. In the chart above, the last entry was the latest, so it's possible that Econ was driven with the highest pressures with them getting progressively lower with time. This would make the 'normal' tank the worst case with pressures running around 25 psi cold. We're pumped up to 32-34 cold now, and we'll see how things turn out.
