It's all in the factory tires. But I still disagree strongly.

Like Shatner said, the OEM tires are mediocre. I could not find much of any info on the Sp7000's at Dunlops site. Looking over tire rack reviews, most folks dislike them and they are rated in the fair category, with most not intending to buy again.
I happened to take the CRZ to the mountains this weekend and was playing around on the switchbacks. I dialed it back a little as the road conditions were unpredictable. The stock tires were actually better than I had expected, but there's still some margin for improvement. And while MT measured grip, it's meaningless if a car can't handle transitions well. The CRZ was quite neutral and composed in the twisties. Maybe they tested it in normal mode? |

It should be noted that the poor handling performance numbers measured by Motor Trend were from the CVT CRZ.
. The 6MT did considerably better. 0.84 vs 0.73 skidpad and 27.5 seconds vs 29.0 seconds figure 8. In fact the 6MT's numbers were close to the best in class for MT's testing. see comparison to Volkswagen TDI here: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...test_data.html I am not sure how to explain that difference since they both roll on the same rubber. But perhaps the Traction control is set differently between the CVT and 6T or Motor Trend forgot to disable the traction control when testing the CVT. |
