Im thinking about taking my first road trip in the cr-z, driving from the middle of the country to california. I've checked the weather and it doesn't look like any big snow is expected between here and there, but does anyone think I'll have any issues not having snow tires? I've just got the stock all seasons. I'm going to tahoe, but it's been 50degrees there.. I'll obviously drive through the Rockies. I've never been west in the winter. Does anyone think I'll have trouble? Is snow do-able with the all seasons? Thanks! |

Some mountain passes have traction tire/chain laws when the weather gets messy. Frequently have them in the Cascades. It seems to have been relatively quiet with fronts coming in so far in the PACNORWEST, but starting to get some action here now in the form of rain, which keeps on moving west of course and turns into snow minimally in the higher elevations. Just to be safe, I would recommend getting a set of chains. May not need em.. But...

Should be able to get em at any tire store.. I can't remember if you are on stock tires - if so, chains should be pretty easy. Custom rims/rubber, may not be a good idea as they can destroy rims. Of course, when the snow starts there is usually a run on chains. I would thing in the midwest, they would be available just about anywhere if you were wanting to get them in advance.
One thing, they are really hard on the suspension unless riding on snow or packed snow.. Usually max 35mph limit.. |
