If it's not your car, and the other driver is OK with the seats, how about a portable lumbar support (Obus Forme works well for my chronically bad back).
It won't damage the seat, can be removed at any time, doesn't look bad, and best of all, it is well designed to help your back. Whatever you choose, I hope it works for you. I know how debilitating LBP can be, and that's no fun!

Thanks for that link, I'll be looking into that. Fortunately, the primary driver is somewhat oblivious to the need or lack of lumbar support. So if I were to find a 'cheap' way of modding the seat, it would probably be a better alternative considering our finances these days.

You may want to look into an inflatable air bladder system. There are several you can find on the web. Here are some links to illustrate:

Colin,
I don't know your circumstance, but have you ever heard of this: http://www.treatyourownback.com/subscriber/ A simple book with a dumb title, but it probably saved my life - literally. Here are some of the Obus Forme products: ObusForme.com | Obus Forme Home I have the ultraforme, and the high back rest supports, and find them both very helpful. Have not needed them in the CR-Z, yet, though.
