It made me really nervous at first as well because I've grown up with a 3k oil change family. I asked multiple honda technicians about it and they all told me to listen to what the display tells you. It takes a lot of things into account, ie. the distance you drive, how often you drive, how you drive, etc.

Because of age and no other urgent requirements, my annual mileage is circa 3k/annum. However I did make a trip from here, Reston, Va, to Birmingham, Al this past late September. I had the machine completely checked and serviced at my local repair shop; the local Honda dealerships are customer rated in the zilch or lower class. And I know from experience with my old 2000 Insight. Bummer.
After 1500 miles RT in tough driving, weather and traffic and bad road surfaces in some areas, I checked the oil level about a week after recovery from the long haul. Oil consumption - Nil; color a smidgen less than clear. ZeroW-20 synthetic of any brand is worry free. Might not hold true in the high deserts or Alaska, but here it is good stuff.
