Default Gas tank door

Yesterday my dad brought up that the door to the gas tank opens even if the car is locked unlike the trunk. He's afraid that someone might do something like put sugar in it because they think it'd be funny. So I was wondering, has anyone else thought about it, or have a solution so I don't have to worry about it anymore?

It has been a topic of conversation on the Forum.

Here are some links discussing the door and the cap itself.

In case anyone is interested... (Locking Fuel Cap)

Yea - I was dissapointed the refueling door did not lock. But you can get an actual locking gas cap.

A note... some aftermarket locking gas caps may not pass all emission requirements. If you're in an area where emissions testing includes testing the seal of the gas cap, you may want to hang on to your OEM one for that reason.

I'm not the least bit concerned though... having owned a Jeep without a locking gas cap for a few years (and not even a cover to go over it), nothing ever happened to it.

One early morning I took my wife to the local Dunkin Donuts (no, I'm not a cop). Upon exiting my then new 05 GTO I got a strange look from a girl standing at the bus stop in front of the store. After about 5 minutes in the store, my wife and I returned to the car only to find a massive key scratch down the entire right side of the car. Of course, the girl was gone.

I didn't know the girl from Eve and I have no idea why she picked me for her little voyage into vandalism. Good thing she was gone or I would be serving a life sentence in prison for choking her to death. Maybe she didn't like donut eaters? Sad since we only got coffee.

EDIT: I guess the point is that you can't account for folks that want to commit random acts of vandalism. Sugar in the gas tank is a common prank for teenagers.

Given that the cover looks the same as most of those that do unlock from a lever inside the car, I would expect that it would be passed up just as easily as those are. Given the small number of CR-Z's on the road, it's probably not widely known by vandals around the country/world that all it takes is a simple push to open it.
