I heard from a friend (with a lot of car business background) that when car salesmen manage to get a particularly favorable deal (for them), they will give the unsuspecting buyer a hat as a spiff.

Then they will walk the buyer around the dealership wearing the hat so his sales buddies all know how he scored.

Has anyone ever gotten a hat from a dealer? I have.

When I worked at Mitsubishi we never had gifts like that, on another note, whenever I go to Mercede's dealer with my mom, she gets gifts like crazy, our cupboards full of plates and cups from Fletcher Jones Mercedes...Shes gotten like 3 or 4 hats too, but shes a great customer to them too, I have never seen her put the hat on and be paraded around like a trophy though, so thats a new one to me.

Begs the question - did/do they let you keep the Hat aftwards?

That's pretty funny. I wear ball caps alot. Often times I make a deal on the condition of "Oh and throw in floor maps and a cap as well". It works 66% of the time. It's the mats they really don't want to part with for free.

I've been to a few dealers around Las Vegas that have a big gold bell. When you sign a deal, you ring the bell. I've never bought from them but heard the bell ring a few times. It might be the same type of thing.
